The "Kill Comic Sans" game

If you're someone who loves to hate Comic Sans, the casual script released by Microsoft in 1994, you'll like this time-waster. Take out your aggression on floating words and kill Comic Sans. My position on Comic Sans: I dislike it (and other childlike, informal handwriting fonts similar to it), but maybe one day I'll get a project for which it's perfectly suited. So far, that day has not come. Blast away.

I like it because it is so playful, all this hating a font just bothers me.

Oh, goodie... a new time-waster! Just what I need! :)

i like comic sans- its my go to font for emails. Seriously, all my work emails are in comic sans. As a result, i dont use it for anything else- only emails, never on a 'real' project

This is pretty funny. I don't like Comic Sans because it's the font one of my least-favorite co-workers always uses in e-mails and when I see it, the back of my neck starts to crinkle up. Had fun blasting for a minute this Friday.

Gee, do ya suppose DKB and Anne K. work at the same place??? ;););)

I don't like it either, but I have read that some dyslexics find it to be one of the more readable commonly available fonts. So I guess it serves a purpose.
Still, if there is a choice, I won't use it.

When I see Papyrus, I think "ugh, hippies", and just keep on walking. You know when Papyrus is appropriate? Never, that's when.

I use Comic Sans for my personal emails. It looks more casual than Times New Roman or the other choices my email package gives me.

I use Bookman for work messages.

Comic sans is never appropriate, at least any more. It's like 80's mall bangs that were cool for a few years, but definitely not any more, even with all the other things that are cool again from the 80's.

And I just saw a website today that uses it, ugh. Now, to go play the game!

This essay was pointed my way today, after reading this post, and I couldn't help but comment with a link.

I laughed so hard... Thanks for bringing a little cheer and guns to my afternoon.

Comic Sans is one of my least favorite fonts. Right next to Broadway.

Yeech.

They need to do the same with "Calibri". It bugs me like crazy and stupid Office 2007 uses it as the default font.

Comic Sans was my least favorite font until Calibri appeared.

Everything I learned about proper penmanship came from the Zaner-Bloser method of handwiting. I owe a lot to that style-that's why I like the comic sans font. Sure, it's dull, but at least it's legible!

Oh Grandma G - you made me laugh out loud!

As for Comic Sans -- I have no strong animosity towards it. To me it's just a relief from my Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman world!

hahaha Love this because I hate Comic Sans!! :D Looks soo unprofessional! :D

Elementary Ed. majors' go to font... it is one of the few that actually resembles the letters that we are expecting kids to read and write. That said... I ONLY use it when I am doing a preschooler project. ;)

Leone said...

I don't quite loathe it BUT it does look horrible on a website or anything that's meant to look professional. Amateur hour.

The DKB + Anne K. comments cracked me up! haha

Rath beat me to McSweeney's Comic Sans post. I read it the other day on Felicia Day's Google+ page.

You people are running around a round room trying to p*# in the corner! It's a FONT people, not a communist manifesto! Chill for goodness sake........

I'm also a comic sans liker. I don't understand the dislike. At work we have to use "clan". Clan?! What a name. I don't wanna be a clan with those peeps.

I'm sick of arial. Its boring.

The main problem with comic sans is that it is getting used in non-casual non-playful settings. I work in academia and have seen powerpoints, memos, emails, journal articles and CVs written in comic sans. It seems too as though those who are the highest up in our university are most likely to use comic sans (almost as though they want to try to seem more approachable by using the font).

I'd very much like it banned from my university.

I use it at work every day, because I'm a kindergarten teacher and Comic Sans is the only font in my OpenOffice package (I hate OO, by the way, but that's all we have) that looks like Zaner-Bloser manuscript, which is the handwriting style we teach students in our district. Look at the differences in the letters a and g in fonts. Comic Sans uses basic manuscript a and g with no serifs. Kindergartners are not taught to write letters with serifs. (I'm with Kelly G and Anonymous).

That said, I do not use it for anything else, because I prefer more clean-cut fonts and because I think Comic is a little over-used. It isn't professional, and I don't think that documents intended for adults' eyes should be written in a children's font.

But, if you like it and can get away with using it, go for it. =)

OH YEAH! I loved this...hate hate comic sans. Every kid in art class chooses this font when they want to be 'cute'
This is NOT cute. It is poorly designed. Any self respecting graphic artist will not use this for anything other than a ransom note.

That is so random, I love it! I sent the link to my boyfriend as well. I am definitely not a fan of comic sans at all.
