Decorate cakes with stencils
I'm not a huge frosting fan, but I do love powdered sugar, cocoa, and graphic shapes. I think I need to make some cake stencils like these from Martha. Get instructions for making your own with downloadable templates right here. More downloads are here. I like this homemade cupcake stencil, too. You could also download a font that would work well, like this one.

what a great and easy well to dress up a simple cake! i will definitely find a way to do this for halloween goodies :)
I love that idea! And it's so easy to do. Your blog always provides me with wonderful ideas. And as a fellow graphic designer, I love your graphic design work. :)
What cake is black? The black makes a fantastic backdrop, but I wonder what it's made of.
I guess it's super chocolatey?
Those are sooooooooo cute!!! I love the scalloped design. For $10.99, I may just purchase one. Thanks for the tip. :)
I have done that using paper doileys. The kind that you can usually find around Valentines day.
oooh, loving this, might have to make a few of those cute scallop ones for my baby shower, yum
omg! I want a turkey stencil so I can make a pretty cake for Thanksgiving on Monday. (Canadian Thanksgiving)
That was really great and easy way to decorate a cake. Always back and never decorate it, find it too troublesome. But I guess now there is an easy way of doing it.
Thanks for the info!
Wow, that's such a great idea, and the stencils are probably pretty easy to DIY. I'm not much of a baker, and making frosting look pretty gives me fits. These stencils make a pretty good excuse to skip frosting all together.
I never thought about making my own. That's perfect for the kids parties! ('course, there will have to be a thick layer of frosting underneath to satisfy those little sweet teeth.)
I have to get a set. This will simplifies my life and looks cute.
While I definitely can appreciate the beauty of a cake stencil... I just keep thinking... Who doesn't like frosting??? There'd have to be a way to use both for a cake to be truly delicious. Or maybe I need to learn how to make a cake that doesn't come out of a box, so that i might enjoy a more flavorful cake that only needs a delicate topping.
I tried this once, and I guess I'm not Martha. 'Cause it sure did not work : /
I tried making snowflakes. Such a fantastic idea, but such a sad result. For me anyway... Maybe I should try again. These are so darn cute!
That's fantastic! I am going to do that with sugar cookies!

those are great! can't wait to try some out.
This is a great idea and may just help in the makings of the dessert bar for our wedding.
Thank you so very much for sharing this!! I can bake well....but i never know what to do in terms of frosting and icing and almost always end up just dusting the cake with iciing sugar. This is great!!!!! Cheerio!
I am lovin' it! Of course, I'm thinking about taking some of my stencils I already have and using them for this. You could do theme parties with the right stencils. And I am having a group birthday party this weekend...wheels are turning...
oh... =) great I was looking for these kind of stencils!
I only got to buy a cake form without a hole! :D eheh
I'm with you.. give me powdered sugar anyday.
Stencilling is great fun, not that I'm any paragon of baking or anything, but dd loves to bake and we've made them out of paper. It gets a bit messy, but that's part of the fun :)
those do look extremely neat and pretty. but in my world, frosting is the only redeeming factor about cake. without it they seem dry. maybe putting a glaze on first, then the stencil would work.
Again with the great ideas!
I love your blog so much - you never fail to deliver!
My cakes-from-a-boxed-mix will never look the same again!! :)

How cool! These are really neat and something I'd love to try. Thanks for the links for the downloadable stencils.
I agree. I'm a fan of cake, but I tend to scrape all of the frosting off of it. This would be a great way to compromise.

big kisses from argentina
Welcome, Vivi!
What a great idea. Thanks for sharing : )

Thank you for sharing! I can't wait to bake my next cake!
For those of you who looove frosting, one thing you could do is make a double decker cake, frosting the middle, and leaving the top plain for the stenciled decoration.
i love a cake stencil. about a million years ago, i made one for cupcakes to be served at a kentucky derby party... man it was tough to cut out those tiny little jockeys :)
Thanks for these links! What a great idea.
those are genuis!
I'm with you on frosting: yuck! But these ideas are lovely.
Thanks for the great idea!
What fabulous stencils. I've tried to make my own, but they're never this detailed. I'll have to download these now! Thanks.
Fabulous idea! I love it and it seems something that even I could do...and that is saying a lot considering I make cake from the box. This could add a personal touch. Thanks!
Very cool. I'll have to remember this the next time I make a cheesecake!
love it.
