Giveaway: The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer

Maybe you splurged on a digital SLR camera, imagining yourself taking dreamy photos like a pro. Except that you haven't quite gotten around to learning how, so your camera is permanently stuck on the auto setting. You know you can do better... but how? If that's you, Katie Evans' new e-book, The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer, will help you show that camera who's boss.

Katie writes in a conversational style that's friendly and accessible, and won't make you throw yourself off a bridge when you read about f-stops and shutter speeds. Topics include types of lenses, exposure, settings, lighting, how to get subjects to relax and act like normal people, composing pictures, and fixing up your photos using software. Some of my favorite tips are:
• How to get your subject's eyes to look sparkly instead of dull
• How to make a DIY clip for your camera's flash to minimize the harsh edges you usually get
• How to make a so-so photo great with a few editing tricks

Win a free copy
Katie is giving away five free e-books, each a $35 value. Want one? Leave a comment here with your email address or other way of contacting you. And mention something interesting you'd like to photograph. (I'm betting 70% of the answers will be kids, but we'll see.) Five winners will be selected, contacted, and announced in this post. Giveaway closes at midnight CT on Friday, Sept. 30th.

Get a discount
Interested in purchasing a book? Enter the code ORANGE at checkout and get $5 off the e-book, now through Oct. 7th.

Update: The giveaway is now closed. Congrats to lucky random winners Robyn, Britt, Jolkipalki, Rachel, and Jessica! They've been contacted and will be soon be taking better pictures.

After spending all my money recently on my first ever Nikon DSLR, I find myself drooling over photography books and magazines in the library. I'd love to win this e-version.

Before my son went to school, he brought me a painting of a flaming box, childlike and simple, and he called it house for the sun. That's how I've thought of my camera many times... I love to photograph the sun in so many ways, and yet realize it's impossible to capture that intense heat, light, shadow, reflection, scale in one little box. I will keep trying.

Fiona said...

Oh, this is exciting! I've just moved to a new city, Edinburgh in Scotland, and there's so much beautiful architecture and so many stunning views that I'd love to be able to do justice. I'm hopeless with a camera because I've no idea what I'm looking for. I wonder if this would be helpful?

This is so awesome, I'm probably going to buy this even if i don't win - please don't pull me from the pile for that comment :)

Hoping this book will help, because I have bought other books and they are like reading latin. Like the author has to justify that he spent money going to college for this - it doesn't help me!

Yes, you are correct! I would photograph kids BUT not just any kids...my class full of 26 first graders doing what first graders do best: LIVE! I love those kids and want to take amazing pictures of them. This book would definitely help me make the most of my photography. What could be better than to make those already bright shining six-year-old's eyes shine a little brighter??

I'm our backup photographer at work (I'm a PR gal), but I always feel like I could do better. This is exactly what I need. I just need a few tips and tricks. Also, a few friends have asked me to take pictures for them, one is for her wedding! I'm scared to say yes because I know I have more to learn.

I would love to get better at the candid moments. Those are the pictures that show the most emotion, for me, and the photos I treasure.

Totally one of those people who splurged on a suuuuuper fancy camera and am now having a weeeee bit of trouble putting it to proper use. What sort of proper use, you say? I recently moved back to small town Iowa after living for a couple years in a big deal big city abroad, and what fascinates me most is the trash people put out for collection. Doll houses, furniture, old stoves, etc. etc. etc.

And my email, this time! an mei ling at gmail point com (no spaces, and the usual punctuation, of course).

Oh, great give away. I, offcourse, take great pictures ;) and I would love for my husband to take great pictures of me and my 4 month old baby girl. Instead of the 'ok, both of you stop moving' pictures he produces now. He won't listen to me, so maybe he will take some hints from somebody else.

Don't worry I still love him very much. I would just like to be in a picture that isn't to bright/dark/moved or otherwise not ok.

for the past three New Year's my resolutions have been to take a self-defense class and to open an etsy shop.
And as many have mentioned before me, good photography is key to a successful etsy shop.
On the other hand, learning tips and tricks about how to take better pictures probably won't be helpful in the self defense department. Except maybe I'll start carrying my camera on a strap around my neck and any potential attacker would be less likely to assault me for fear I'd snap a picture to later incriminate him or her. But then they'd probably just steal the camera after beating me up. And in fact, having a fancy camera on person might actually incite crime if the motivation was to steal the camera.
I'd have to rely on my superspeed reflexes to use the flash in my potential attacker's eyes, then make my escape before the temporary blindness wore off.
Yes, that will have to do.

So I'll take well-lit and smartly styled pictures of scherenschnitte and mobiles that I make for my etsy shop and maybe frenzied, unfocused close-ups of fast-approaching menacing eyes (if those turn out well, I'll feature them in my etsy shop too...there's no reason one person shouldn't profit from another's misfortune if they brought the temporary blindness upon themselves, right?)

I would really like to win this ebook. I started going pro but "real life" had me pushing it aside and now I feel like I don't even know my camera anymore!! I loved doing portraits (young, old, in between) and would love some help in getting back in the groove.

This is exactly what I need!

I would love to get a great photograph of a glass of iced coffee with milk - right as the milk floats down and makes those lovely skeins before it disperses completely into the coffee. I've been dying to get the perfect shot of that for a while, but I always seem to miss the perfect moment.

I have had an SLR for 4 years now and I have no idea how to use it. I purchased it to take pictures of my silver and gold jewelry, but even that I couldn't master. So basically it sits in a drawer. I would love to learn how to take close-up images of fruits and flowers. In particular I like black and white images.
