Giveaway: The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer

Maybe you splurged on a digital SLR camera, imagining yourself taking dreamy photos like a pro. Except that you haven't quite gotten around to learning how, so your camera is permanently stuck on the auto setting. You know you can do better... but how? If that's you, Katie Evans' new e-book, The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer, will help you show that camera who's boss.

Katie writes in a conversational style that's friendly and accessible, and won't make you throw yourself off a bridge when you read about f-stops and shutter speeds. Topics include types of lenses, exposure, settings, lighting, how to get subjects to relax and act like normal people, composing pictures, and fixing up your photos using software. Some of my favorite tips are:
• How to get your subject's eyes to look sparkly instead of dull
• How to make a DIY clip for your camera's flash to minimize the harsh edges you usually get
• How to make a so-so photo great with a few editing tricks

Win a free copy
Katie is giving away five free e-books, each a $35 value. Want one? Leave a comment here with your email address or other way of contacting you. And mention something interesting you'd like to photograph. (I'm betting 70% of the answers will be kids, but we'll see.) Five winners will be selected, contacted, and announced in this post. Giveaway closes at midnight CT on Friday, Sept. 30th.

Get a discount
Interested in purchasing a book? Enter the code ORANGE at checkout and get $5 off the e-book, now through Oct. 7th.

Update: The giveaway is now closed. Congrats to lucky random winners Robyn, Britt, Jolkipalki, Rachel, and Jessica! They've been contacted and will be soon be taking better pictures.

This is a great giveaway! Thanks! We splurged on a DSLR because we had a 20month old and one due any day...and the Kodak easyshare wasn't cutting it for those priceless moments. We've had it for four months and it is stuck on auto. I want to photograph moments, not just faces. And I'd like to capture some things in nature to use as art in my home.

I'm definetly from the group of 30% not saying "my kids" - because I have non. I'm a 22 year old student, travelling the world, loving nature, animals & all those humans and cultures I meet while my journeys. I'd love to capture those moments in a way that everybody taking a look at it will feel like 'I have been there'. I see such photographies a lot but can't get such results on my own. I hope that this eBook would help me with that!
Looking forward to your next posts & best wishes

I feel like I'm trying to operate a rocket ship with my new camera, so perhaps this book could get me over the hump. I love to photograph architecture, the landscape and my children.

My kid is my best subject to shoot. Other than that, I love nature, or rather the details of nature that some folks don't pay attention to that makes the best photograph.

I would love a chance to win this book, it looks fantastic, I bet it's got lots of yummy tips on photography I've never read before. I would use this book to fine tune my skills on which lens to use for what, I never have any idea on what works best for which situations.

I would like to take better pictures of dogs in shelters so that they get adopted more frequently. Most of the photos they use are such bad quality they do not do the dogs justice.

My favourite things to photograph are those unique things I come across when I get lost :) Oh...and anything under a fisheye is awesome.

I would LOVE to win this book. I bought a digital SLR when my first child was born...and totally intended to take a class...but, it's now 4 yrs and 3 kids later and my setting is still almost always on auto. I NEED to learn to use my camera better! I would love to learn to take frame-worthy pics of my own kids/family.

i'd like to photograph my flat (apartment), namely my turret. We've just had to reluctantly rent it out whilst we move from the east to the west coast for three years for my studies (this sounds very dramatic till I clarify that I mean 'of Scotland' so it's only 60 miles, but in Scotland that is ENORMOUS....Edinburgh and Glasgow are different worlds).

I'd love a classy pic of my beloved flat to keep me company in Glasgow these next few years, but everything I've tried comes out all dull and boring....

I know the manual settings on my DSLR pretty well, but need some go-to tricks to compose photos better and take more professional-looking shots. I take millions of photos of my daughter, but want to take better photos of her with her grandparents, her dad, and our kitties!

Thanks for the giveaway, my fingers are crossed! erinsenge (at) gmail (dot) com

This is super! While currently childless, I do anticipate photographing my children in the future. In the meantime, however, I love to photograph my handmade greeting cards and artwork as a reminder of the things I have created and for inspiration when I have crafter's-block.

This would be an awesome asset! I prefer landscape photos, but I would love to learn techniques to take other types as well. Thanks for sharing!
