DIY decorating with books

If you need a cheap decorating idea that will make you look smarter, check out these tutorials using books as wall art. You probably have a million books sitting around already. If not, hit up your nearest garage sale, rescue some from a dumpster, or take some from the stacks on the floor at my house.

I like them, but it just makes me sad to see books destroyed! I'm SUCH a nerd ;]

These are all great ideas! My sister and I recently acquired a bunch of old Reader's Digests that have really neat designs on the covers and we've been planning to use them for something. We'll have to make some book art out of them! :)

I have an encouraging word for those who think of these books as being destroyed -- think of this as giving these books a new life! After all, there are so many books in boxes and on shelves that may never be opened again, and yet crafts like this can allow people to enjoy these beautiful books for years to come.

I make clocks out of books, and although it sometimes pains me to "destroy" them, I know that I'm also allowing them to be enjoyed, rather than just stuck in a box or on a shelf.

Oooo and Ros and Kat - the books will have been read and loved - they have served their purpose and are now going on to a better life!

SOOOOOO funny! I was just looking at the floating books "bookshelf" at umbra a few days ago. It's really quite pretty if you have similar sized books to stack up and wow guests with. Love it!

When it comes to Reader's Digest Condensed books, I don't think it's fair to say they're being ruined or destroyed. Upcycled is more like it.

FYI - the Michael Chabon book in the photo is worth up to $600 if it's a first edition...or WAS...
