Coraline
In a clever marketing move, the promoters of the new stop-motion movie Coraline sent out handmade boxes to bloggers. (And it worked, because here I am, posting about the movie.) Who wouldn't be intrigued by a movie set made entirely of tiny handmade things? You can watch the trailer here. And the website is a wonderland of rooms to hunt through and special things to find, including a printable bookmark and a downloadable sweater pattern. And if you do nothing else, at least watch this clip about the woman who knits miniature garments. Amazing. The movie opens February 6.

The knitter is Althea Crome and she is not only extremely talented, she is delightful in person. I have met her and seen her projects in person. They are amazing. I can't wait to see this film. She told us about the whole process last summer and I was immediately in love with the concept. Go to her bug knits website for more info on her.

I read the book and can't wait to see the movie, even without the appeal to crafters as a demographic that warms my heart.

I read this book several years ago and it became My Favorite Book. I recommended it to kids all the time at the library. Scary doesn't even begin to describe it...
Having just watched the trailer...I think I'd be rather freaked if I got a package with buttons for eyes!!
But it's doing what they hoped...we're talking about it! :o)
When I opened the package, I didn't realize the buttons are for eyes. Only after watching the trailer did I get it! Eeek!
Since nobody else did it, I'll just add the Coraline was written by super-talented Neil Gaiman. If you don't know his work, look out for books, ans I highly recommend the Sandman comic series.
Looking forward to the movie myself.

I am soooooooo jealous!!!! I'm a huge Neil Gaiman fan & I've been looking forward to this film for a couple of years now. Over the last few weeks I've seen the various Coraline boxes popping up on various blogs & I think they're fascinating. Oh, how I wish I had received one! You are an extremely lucky individual!
The book is dark and wonderful - Neil Gaiman is a genius. Great marketing move on their part... as soon as I saw the button "eyes" I got the creeps. I hope the movie retains said creepiness!

I LOVE Neil Gaiman. I am currently reading Neverwhere, and it is fabulous! And if you like fantasy type books, read Stardust. A thousand times better than the movie!
Jess, I'm glad they are so clever; they need to be because the trailer for the movie is so creepy and scary, there's no way that kids under about 12? should go and see it! After watching the trailer, Koji said to my mom, "Grandma, that's a bad movie, isn't it?" As for you, though, free stuff is free stuff, right? Are you going to watch it?
Yeah, probably on DVD. I'm curious to see what it looks like. I wouldn't take kids under 20, though. Okay, or maybe 12. They'll have nightmares. It looks spooky. I hope Koji isn't traumatized just from watching the trailer!

A very innovative marketing idea! I read the Neil Gaiman's book 2 about years ago and I'm in love with Dave McKean illustrations inside. I'm a little dissapointed that McKean style doesn't really appear on the trailer, but after browsing for a while I really really like how the movie turns out.

I stopped reading this particular book because it put a young girl in the center of all this creepiness. She was just my daughter's age and I just had to give it up.
I also can't watch Law and Order SVU ever since I had kids.
