Six things

Reinaswan tagged me to list six unremarkable quirks, and I happen to be in the mood to do it. I'll pick three things I like and three things I don't like.

1) I'm sick to death of seeing owls on everything. No more owls, please. (Of course, if you just read that and you make things with owls on them, I'm sure I've offended you terribly. So sorry! You should continue making owl things, because apparently people still love them and you can make a boat load of money.)

2) I get really crabby in airports and crowded, noisy places.

3) I think Crocs are the ugliest shoes I've ever seen.

4) I drank my first mojito last summer and it's my new favorite drink. I'm going to start growing my own mint to feed my habit.

5) I love the Olympics. This is peculiar since I have zero interest in sports otherwise. I wait and wait for an Olympic year to come around, and I'd rather stay home every night to watch the games than go out and have fun with people. Also, I'm so moved by this Adidas commercial and ad, and I think the Beijing Olympic mascots are ingenius.

6) In the last four days I have become addicted to eBay. I've only spent $15, but I can't stop browsing. Help, help!

(Owls on left available here; owl on right available here.)

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the owl pictures was "oh no! now she has owls on her site too!". I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is a little tired of seeing them everywhere...

Jessica Jones said...

Yeah. I was even hesitant to sully my blog with them.

I'm so with you on the owl thing. Enough already! My reticence is starting to spread to birds too...

ditto on the olympics! but i like sports outside of that too. are the summer or winter your favorite?

I have to agree that Crocs are super ugly. It seems like everyone in the free world is wearing them except me. I'd rather wear cardboard boxes than those things.

I'm not a sports fan, either, except when my oldest is playing baseball. There's nothing more exciting!

wow... are you me??? (other than that my husband has the orange fascination - hence my subscription to your blog)

I've gone through sleep deprivation during the past 2 olympic games just to watch the around-the-clock coverage. And I buy mint weekly just so I can "possibly" have a mojito.

oh darn. i guess i won't send you those orange crocs i bought to thank you for blogging about my aprons. (really though, your thank you gift will arrive once the fabric i ordered to make it gets here!) i hope i don't see it on your hate list with the owls!

100% agree on the crocs and although I still love owls, I totally see how this sudden overdose is a bit of a toomuchery!

Omnipresent owls? Did ancient Athens make a comeback I am unaware of or something?

Ever since everything under the sun has become an Olympic event, I no longer watch the Games (I like curling as much as the next Baja Manitoban, but is it realy Olympic? And synchronized trampoline? Huh?). O tempora! O mores!

Mojitos, hmmmm? You and Ernie Hemingway, although I don't really see you hunting sharks with a tommy gun anytime soon, unless there's a side of you I don't know about? Now, when I could drink, it was gin and tonics or daiquiris for me.

PonyBoy Press said...

I feel the same way about birds and deers and cupcakes...also Owls. Even though I like all those things, you know? My favorite motifs used to be squirrels and houses and trees.....you can see where that is going...I am already not as thrilled with them even though I was for so many years.

OMG, Jess. I'm so addicted to E-bay too. and it's cost me WAY MORE than $15. My smarty pants daughter says, "Mom, it's one thing to add to a collection with E-bay. It's a sickness to start collections with E-bay."
I'm in deep!

Lin said...

I am so with you on the whole croc thing. Totally gross!

Maggie said...

I can't stand croc's. I agree with Mommy the human napkin that cardboard boxes would look tons better. I don't care how comfy they are, they're HIDEOUS!!! Be careful with ebay. It is a dark, deep hole that it difficult to crawl out of! It's like gambling, set a limit!! :)

Crocs are super cute on toddlers. But for adults? Nope. I love the Olympics, too!

Anonymous said...

I've got a mojito thing workin' too ;-)

Stop on by if you're ever in the neighborhood

My fav stuffed animal as a child was an owl, so I'm kinda partial - altho right now I don't think I own anything owly. Are they really everywhere? Interesting. I don't like the looks of Crocs either- and I just always think they must make for sweaty, stinky feet.

Unknown said...

Can we all agree right now to outlaw Crocs? Never have I despised a shoe more. And as for the Olympics - count me in! I, as well, have absolutely no interest in organized sports, but when the Olympics come on - I'm there 24/7 baby!

Anonymous said...

I love mojitos. They are my go-to drink of choice.

Kosmika said...

'I think Crocs are the ugliest shoes I've ever seen'
:) you are my hero!!!
And about the Mojito...I've got already a semi-infestating plantation of mint on my balcony, only to have a mojito anytime i want ;)

monda-loves said...

I might just come in for a bit of bloggy hatred here but I am one of those crocs wearers and I have to admit that I love them!
I do also admit they are not the most dainty of shoes but what I'd say about them is don't knock them until you've tried them - oh, and don't wear them with skinny jeans unless you want to look like a golf club :o)

OH how I agree with the Owl overload and ugly Crocs. I am also tired of the incorrect and overuse of the word "vintage".

I love that commercial!

I will never tire of birds or owls on anything!!!! (I love birds, all birds).

But I'm with you on everything else. Except the Mojitos....too strong for my taste buds. I'm more of a Bellini-type (light and breezy!).

Ok, but everything else, I get.

Crocs are dangerous too!

Well, as an avid gardener, Crocs sure do come in handy - of course so do my red barn boots!
Owls should be left to Indian lore and the tree outside my window, which one landed on about 8 mornings this past winter.(very, very cool)
Mojitos are wonderful if made not-too-sweet.
I have tried to move from EBay to Etsy, but my weird passion for antique doorknobs takes me back to Ebay every time!

Anonymous said...

The secret to a not-too-sweet mojito is to add ginger beer rather than soda - it gives it a fiery bite that counteracts the sweetness and adds more depth to the lime. Believe me, acres of mint have been sacrificed to the research for the perfect mojito!

Jess - I am now convinced you are a right on girl.

Not that I needed convincing, mind you!

I was beginning to feel like the crabby old hermit that no one wanted to be friends with because I too am completely sick of deers, owls, antlers, cupcakes, bunnies, and here goes...

plant life silhouettes!!!!!!!!!

There I said it! I got it out!

My own worth as a designer and blogger was beginning to suffer because I didn't seem to adore these things as much as others seemed to be.

In fact, I'm going to do a very similar post on my own blog about the food world!

Thank you!!!!

i'm so over the owls... what's the big deal with them anyways? the only thing worse for me is butterflies.

Anonymous said...

I am TOTALLY with you on the Crocs thing, I mean... why??

Jessica Jones said...

It's fun to hear everybody's opinions! I'll be the first to admit I've never tried out a pair of Crocs, but I'm sure they're super comfy. How else could they become so popular? So if you love Crocs, that's great. And if you like owls, that's great. I can still be your friend. But it's nice to hear there are kindred spirits out there. :)

Portia, I'll await my orange Croc-print apron. You're too funny. Don't worry. I'll love whatever you come up with. You're so sweet.

Jessica Jones said...

Oh, and I don't know whether I love the winter or summer Olympics more. I think I love them equally!

Vacuum Queen said...

SAME exact mojito experience here! Weird. I made them so often, I had to start making sugar free simple syrup...same proportions (1C. H2O, 1C. fake sugar used for baking; boil; keep in fridge for next mojito fix). And I actually weened myself off of diet soda by having a mojito without alcohol during the days. I'm all about the mint and lime with the soda. Yum.

hey... i found some crocs i like on etsy (and they're orange!)....
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11568348
otherwise, i hate em too.

Anonymous said...

oh god - i hear you with the owl thing. a shop just opened near me "little owl". we're sick of owls!

Jenny said...

...but i love owls.
I hate crocs too. Althoug they are y gardening shoe of choice. Easy to hose out.

Anonymous said...

Too bad the mascot for the Olympics isn't an OWL!

I became addicted to curling during the last winter Olympics. Bring on the summers!

Crocs are ugly but those critters sure are comfortable. I sport them proudly, me and a bunch of 4 year olds!

Concha said...

haaaaa I hate owls and Crocs as well :)

all over the map said...

I knew we had a few things in common. I mean, afterall, you like orange and I am from a town called Orange (which I adore).

I don't have an aversion to the owl but I'm not a fan. Probably because I haven't noticed him everywhere like you have.

I'm opposite when it comes to airports. Love them. May have something to do with working as a flight attendant for 13 years.

LOL about the crocs. I like them even more for being sort of odd and even a bit ugly.

I like mojitos, LOVE the Olympics and eBay is fun, and maybe a bit addictive.

I love these posts ;) I'm totally with you on #5 (olympics) and your eBay is my craigslist--I had no idea craigslist had so much cool stuff!

Fer said...

Have to agree with you about the crocs!!!

:o)

Owls, silhouettes of birds, deer and cherry blossoms ... it's only a matter of time before Holly Hobby gets another outing. And regarding Crocs, I bought a pair specifically for walking around rockpools on summer holidays (practical with those drainage holes, no?), but the plastic makes my feet so hot and itchy that I can't wear them. Not such a bad thing, I guess.

Mary Elizabeth said...

1. I don't like anything OVER exposed. 1 Owl good 10 owls bad
2. Who wouldn't be.
3. I feel the same way about Crocs w/ one exception. Little kids look adorable in them. Grown men, no
4. Mojitos mmm good. Orbit has a Mojito gum that is a pretty close to the real thing.
5. So conflicted
6. Ebay is awesome
7. Love your site!

Anonymous said...

Finally \o/ I agree with you - crocs are the ugliest shoes in the world ( included in Brazil).

Cheryl Arkison said...

Crocs are seriously one of the ugliest things ever invented. If you work in a kitchen, garden, or hospital, go for it. Outside of that, keep them off your feet. Of course, this comes from a former Birkenstock wearer and those aren't any better.

Anonymous said...

I am always looking for a little owly thing...and I am sure every other mother of a Bryn Mawr College graduate is as well. There are a lot of us, so I am glad to hear owls are everywhere. Must be a West coast thing.

Charlotte said...

I still love owls, but it's not as much fun to collect them when they're EVERYWHERE! I do agree on the crocs though, they are hideous. I don't drink mojitos often, but I always have a pack of mojito-flavored Orbit gum in my purse. And I don't even want to get started on how much I spent on e-bay yesterday.

Lori said...

AMEN on the crocs. Shudder.
And the owls. Roll eyes.

Jessica Jones said...

Ha. Portia, that fabric is CUTE! I was picturing the shoes :)

WTWTA said...

omg.
crocs?
i TOTALLY agree.

true croc story:

i was waiting in line at starbucks behind probably the most gorgeous family i had ever seen. wife, husband, and little toddler. cool, young, trendy...
look down, and all THREE of them are wearing matching crocs.

yeah, i pretty much had to walk out after that. didn't even get my starbucks. thanks a lot croc family, thanks a lot.

Jessica Jones said...

Seriously? Whoa, I could never pass up Starbucks, no matter what the people in front of me were wearing. I definitely don't hate Crocs that badly!

Anonymous said...

1 & 3 -- exactly! I actually like how the 70s style owls look, but my goodness that trend has lasted a little too long. Kinda like squirrels and octopi--love them but I am getting kinda antsy for some new animals in the crafty world.

NoGrandmother said...

I am cah-RAY-zee about the Olympics. TiVo is the best thing that ever happened for Olympics fans. I tape absolutely everything and then fast forward through the sappy human interest stories. It's heavenly!

---Virginia, who liked owls before they were The Thing and is now weary of them

meg said...

thank god someone finally said it! no more owls already. or squirrels--rats of the trees, I say. or silouettes of any kind.

Donelda said...

we are so similar, I LOVE the olympics too -- life stops around my house during the O's ... it's all man for himself - get leftovers for dinner, there happens to b e a race going on!!

patricia zapata said...

I agree with the owl thing (although I have been an offender in the past). And the Olympics are wonderful!

Jessica Jones said...

Well, owls were great until they began taking over the world. Somebody has to start trends, right, Patricia? Might as well be you! :)

Alfred T. Mahan said...

I just noticed the "owl to the left...owl to the right" bit. Are you channeling Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Jess? Did these owls "volley and thunder"?

Jessica Jones said...

Nope. Not a reference to the Charge of the Light Brigade, but maybe it was subconscious. :)

Steph said...

i'm with you on the crocs!! why why why!?!

Catching up on some older blog posts here.

My grandma loved--LOVED--owls. Needlepoint owls, tin mobile owls, carved owls, MACRA-freakin'-ME' owls. Bless her. And she lived in a 400 sq. foot house.

As for Crocs... In college, I thought Birks were the ugliest creations a shoe cobbler had ever created. I couldn't believe anyone would go out in public in cork-contoured house shoes. Crocs were one step down from them. But now that I have heal problems, the CrocRx shoes I have are exceedingly beautiful. Pain free is beautiful.

i love mojitos, i hate Crocs, i'm sick of owls but i do not like the Olympics! heee.

and gosh, why have i not thought of growing my own mint for mojitos? i grow basil and a few other things, but i now realise the error of my ways. will be buying mint ASAP!

Allison said...

ha ha - great post. I was just thinking how much I loved those owls when I read your first point. ;) I am totally with you on the noisy, crowded places. HATE strangers bumping into me, especially with their grocery carts...v funny about the Crocs (and your mom buying some). That Adidas commercial is AWESOME! Totally inspired me to watch the Olympics this year - thanks for sharing. I'm going to link to this in my blog. [btw, am becoming addicted to orange...]
