Apartment Therapy behind the scenes
So here's how the AT house tour worked, for anybody who's curious. Last October, an editor from AT emailed asking if we were willing to do a tour of our place. Silly me, I thought that meant they simply wanted some snapshots from around the house, so I dashed off an email saying they could grab some from past posts on this blog. Turns out they send a photographer! Who knew? So months went by, and the shoot finally happened in February.
They sent out Evan Thomas, who is the most personable photographer in probably the whole world. You can check out his great work here. Evan carried in about four tons of lighting equipment and extension cords and set to work. It looked like a movie set in here. Fascinating. I hid in the living room or the office for most of the several-hours-long photo shoot, but at one point I walked past the hallway and discovered Evan doing this:
Which cracked me up. That's been taped to the hallway floor for ages. Obviously. After shooting the rooms, Evan wandered around looking for some interesting little detail shots. Unfortunately, we don't have any interesting little details. He asked if we had any knicknacks or collections, but alas. No knicknacks. So that was it. We hugged, and Evan went home. The end.

You really have a beautiful home! I think my favorite thing is the designs on the wall of the bedroom, but the note on the floor is awesome. that's how you convince us all it's a home and not a set!
Yay! You have returned!
Your cheerful office inspired me to clean mine up -- what a crazy mess it can be when you work from home!
Oh how wonderful! I wasn't sure if the people took the pictures themselves or not, it is good to know. My favourite is the picture of the desks, so tidy. Looks heavenly.
Thanks for sharing behind the scenes--I think a lot of designers forget to explain the not-as-pretty hard work that goes into the end product. Which, in the case of your house, I must say is lovely. And open and inviting. (And when your previous post mentioned snarky comments I was skeptical. It is amazing how people can get so judgmental and picky about SQUARE FOOTAGE of all things.)
Wow! What a great place! And yeah, I got to clean up my office . . . which is trashed. Hey, I was going to ask you about that -- how come you guys don't have any clutter? School notebooks? Stuff your parents made you take away from their houses? Knicknacks? What's the secret?
How cool:) I love the photographer taken of the photographer ~ make sense?
Okay, one more comment . . . Phil says 'Do you have a set of encyclopedias on your bookshelf?' Really?
Evan did our house tour for Apartment Therapy too. :)
Congratulations!
Yeah, how come you don't have any stuff your parents made you take away from their house???
Parent
Yeah, I know. I love your house, Nicole!
Because you haven't made me take anything away from your house, Mom.
Thats a cute note !!!
I loved the house tour and love that you don't have any knick knacks. Knick knacks are highly over-rated, if you ask me.
My favourite detail was the "I am an engineer" statement on the corkboard over the desk. It made me laugh (mostly because it brought to mind a whole bunch of engineer jokes to which anyone who has ever worked or lived with an engineer can probably relate).
And now my question (and if it's too personal, just ignore it)...
How come your mum signs most of her comments "Mum" but you just called her "Mom" in your comment?
(I have a "mum", btw.)
EXACTLY! It's still here! (Your stuff, that is.) I think we'll fill the trunk when we come! ;-)
Mum
Hmm, I don't know, Jen. I guess for variety? I like to call her Mum, Mom, or Mumsy. But never Mother or Ma, right, Mum? I know you're reading this.
Right. (And don't EVER call me Ma!!)
And I have to sign as "Mum", or it doesn't go with my picture. ;-)
How fun! Great place you have...nice to see more of it.
Our house was photographed for a magazine a few years ago. The amount of photography equipment was mind boggling! They ended up having to leave 1/2 of it on the front porch since the house was so small...then run out to grab something. The shoot was in Feb., so the lighting wasn't the best. Large lights were set up outside the house, to shine in....what a traffic stopper. It really did look like a movie set and it took 9 hours to shoot. Unbelievable.
I love your home. You mix colour so well. Makes me think I need to so a bit more with my own abode!!
i loved the photo of the warning!
we recently had a broken floor board, and surrounded it with little orange cones until it was fixed.
congrats on a lovely spread on a.t.
Yay; you are back! I love the house tour, especially the living room. It is so quietly cool, and the color combinations are amazing.
P.S. I found an etsy artist you might like. She does kids clothes, so a little off your beaten track, but they are so cute and lots of them are orange! I like the orange seahorse dress best. courtneycourtney.etsy.com
You're right. So cool and different! Hmm, I'm keeping it in mind for kid birthday presents!
Wow! Where do you put all of your stuff? I just love the clean look of your apartment. What a joy!
I loved your home tour on AT! Your office was my favorite :)
The two questions I have are: does your house always look this neat and is the floor still broken?
I love your apartment! It's so inspiring. I think I'll go fix my office up right now. Maybe with a little orange...
No knickknacks. No knickknacks. I'm trying to process this. None at all, really?
I noticed the rabbit ears. No cable AND no knickknacks? Bravo!
A really nice space.
Well, there are some small vases from Greece and Brazil, a mortar and pestle from Guatemala, and a boomerang from Australia on top of the bookshelves, from friends on their travels. Those are knickknacks, right?
And we do have cable hooked up in the living room. The cord was just lying there when we moved in and there was no reception on the TV, so we plugged it in just for kicks and discovered there was cable. Our first time to have it. I must admit it's fun. It must be included in the monthly assessment or something, because we didn't sign up for it. No Bravo channel, though. Too bad. I wanna watch Project Runway. (Evan didn't take pictures of the old stereo and living room TV for you. He deemed them unsightly. They are.)
Cheryl, that floor has been broken for 2 years, and I'm sorry to say that it still is. :) And the place is not always that neat. It's never really a pig sty, but books and papers pile up. And lots and lots of dirty dishes.
There are some real boobs that comment on AT! It's amazing how so many people never learned that saying...
"if you can't say anything nice don't say ANYTHING at all" I think your place rocks, and I think it's very creative, unique, colorful, cozy, mature. I was happy to see that you didn't decorate with owl prints, silhouettes, or deer antlers.
That sign is hysterical!
oijoy, I know. I find it astounding.
Your apartment is fantastic! Congratulations on being featured on Apartment Therapy!
omg... LOVE that your beautiful home was showcased on Apartment Therapy!! (And such a cute couple, too!)
