Mini bamboo
These were $1 each at the local Jewel grocery store. The little vases are about 3.5" tall. So cute. I hope they don't die. Everybody says it's impossible to kill bamboo, but I had three in a row that bit the dust. Maybe they don't like the chlorinated city water I give them. Too bad for them, though. That's all they're gonna get. Maybe some plant food if they're lucky.
Update: Almost a year later, one is dead. One is thriving. Beats me.

Lucky bamboo are hard to kill but as you know it's not impossible. I have to use spring water to keep mine alive and be careful with the plant food too, use the kind made for african violets. If they last a month (I'm sure they will)I'd say it was worth it!!!
You're kidding. The colors of the vases are so pretty. Great steal. Don't know much about bamboo, but I don't have a green thumb either. I just bought a calla lily plant and I am praying it will make it through, I know how you feel.
Those are great! I have an empty wine bottle that I fill with tap water and let stand overnight. The cholrine dissipates and it's okay to water plants with then.
what a deal! i have bad luck with bamboo, too, though. if anything at least you've got two little mini-vases. :)

So cute! Sounds like a bargain to me, even if they don't last very long. But Annie10's idea sounds like a good one... I think I've heard that somewhere before... give it a try, for ALL your plants!

$1 what a deal. I mean the mini vases. I kill houseplants and right now I have some potted tulips that are looking positively suicidal. But those vases would be awesome. I like to bring in a few blooms every once and a while from my rose bushes.
Those are too cute! I hope our Jewel gets some in. We were plant-sitting some bamboo last winter and managed to kill it. I think we gave it too much water. Or something.
Lucky bamboo dislikes large amounts of sunshine. That seems to kill it faster than anything else I've come across so far.
"lucky bamboo" is actually not bamboo at all, but a kind of dracaena (specifically, dracaena sanderiana). I'd use spring water as aja suggested because the chlorine and fluordie in tap water can be damaging.
Those are cute! I kill just about every plant that I come into contact with, but I keep trying...go figure.
If it really is the chlorine, you could stop by any fish pet store and buy a little bottle of drops that instantly takes all of the chlorine out of a container of water. The stuff is super cheap, and one drop dechlorinates 1 gallon, so the drops should last you a lonnnnng time.

Or for the chlorine, if you leave a bowl of tap water out overnight, the chlorine will mostly evaporate.
what steal. these are great. i love bamboo..but it is impossible to kill. my boyfriend's father made an idiotic decision back in the day to plant bamboo in his back yard...every summer he is out there trying all kinds of crazy things to get rid of it...and has been doing it for the past five years that I've known him. (It is quite comical from our perspective, but I'm not sure from his)
Bamboo's impossible to kill? Well maybe that's the plant for me. My plants never last long.
My bamboo has been hanging in there and I don't consider myself to have the greenest thumb either. Those are great vases!
So cute and an amazing bargain! I haven't tried growing a bamboo plant, but I am thinking about installing bamboo flooring in our home. :-) (Trying to be eco-friendly, don't cha know!)
I love bamboo but unfortunately have killed several by over-watering. Poor things...

The bamboo isn't impossible to kill. Difficult, but not impossible. I think ours died after months of neglect. As well, cats are one of the lucky bamboo's natural predators (well, natural in an apartment environment). They seem to enjoy gnawing on the stalk - which is bad news for both bamboo and kitty (mine puked for a week).
I love these. Even if the bamboo dies, the pots are great.

Bamboo can die...take my word for it, I've killed two!
I've kept some goldfish alive for two years now, and I know that leaving the water out overnight as others have mentioned removes the chlorine. So does some stuff called Stress Coat, that will last you until you are 100 because you need so little. I'm not sure if bamboo would like stress coat, but if you move on to goldfish, I recommend it.

go to wal mart, buy a 62 cent gallon of distilled water. as tiny as those vases are, and since you only have to water bamboo like once a week or so, a gallon will last a long time.
or you could just boil the city water...
Jess, it is the chlorine that kills them. I use the chlorout stuff that you use in your aquarium in the water I give it. Not going to waste bottled on bamboo.

I have cats. I give those vases 7 minutes shelf life before the 3 amigos turn them to shards.

Here's a couple of tips for keeping the bamboo alive...It likes less sun than more; definately don't keep it in direct light. I have some that is 2 years old that sits in a shady north corner. Also, DON'T fertilize it; the salts that are in fertilizer will burn it up!
Very cute. Makes me want to head over to Jewel and get some, but unfortunately, I have the knack for unintentionally killing bamboo :-(

And Barry, tragedy has already struck. I knocked over the red vase myself, so now it has a chipped rim. I didn't even need any cats to do it for me.
Ummm...I have managed to kill my bamboo several times. I have a black thumb.
The flower section at Dominick's has some really cool stuff too. They even have these neat embellished fabric panels. I wanted to buy them all.
My 3 year old bamboo just bit the dust this morning. I defy impossible!

The lucky bamboo kind can be kept alive longer if you get out the stems and cut off the little roots once in a while, before they form a lump.
They do this so you can stick them into soil, if you like, but if you intend to keep them in water, you need to trim those strings before they get too big.
I have planted one and it is going into the sixth year :-)
I got a bamboo plant when I was a teenager, 8 years later, mine is like ten times it's original size! I put it in a medium sized vase, couple inches of water, gently slid in some pretty glass marbles, put the plant in, more water to cover the roots, gently slid in (holding it at an angle) some more marbles, and a little more water about an inch above the stalk. The marbles give the roots something to cling to, and stability, since there is no dirt. My plant thrives on my kitchen sill, with indirect sunlight. I do periodically make sure the roots are still covered in water, but other than that, easiest houseplant ever! Hope that helps those who've had trouble.
