Out for a walk

We went for a walk in the drizzle on Saturday to admire the leaves.

It was also a chance to use our umbrella for two that we bought on a whim in San Francisco during a downpour. We hope everyone in the passing cars admired it. You can get your own here.

I'm intrigued by this house up the street. Its owners had it painted at the end of the summer, and I swear it was fuchsia the first time I saw the new paint job. Two weeks later, it was this bright red. Still fun, but the hot pink was awesome! I had been planning to leave them a little anonymous card on their porch praising their bravery. But I guess they reconsidered.

These are some moldy berries. I don't have much to say about that.

  2. i'm guessing what you saw was the tinted primer. :^)

  3. Do you think?? I considered that, but it looked so perfect and opaque and finished, that I wondered. And it sat that way awhile. I'm going to persist in thinking they picked pink as their color and then chickened out. It makes for a more interesting story in my head.

In my daydream, the wife loved it but the husband hated it, and they fought for days. He slept on the couch. The tension was unbearable. Finally she acquiesced, and the house was painted red.

  4. Hehe...we painted our living room red (sans primer...we will know next time!), but it didn't LOOK red until the 5th coat. But your theory is more fun!

  5. Such lovely pics! They look like they belong on My Blog! ;)

The house is so pretty! They probably decided the pink clashed with the fall colors, so they repainted it. :) There's an awful grayish-purple one in your old hometown that sure does not go with the reds of fall! (Or anything else in town, for that matter!)

  7. That umbrella is a great idea but it doesn't take into consideration height differences! If I hold the umbrella we are sharing my guy is always complaining about me whacking him on the back of the head because I am just a little bit shorter. But then if he holds it it is way to high and the rain blows in on me. Maybe they should invent one with a lower side and a higher side? ;)

  8. I came to suggest the fuschia was tinted primer, but I see this was suggested, so I'm going to instead enjoy your daydream about what might have happened, because it's so funny. :D

  9. Jess, the photos are extraordinarily beautiful. Perhaps the home is merely owned by eccentrics that have an affinity for constantly changing the color of their house...perhaps orange next time? Mmmmm.

  10. My parent's house looked pink when they painted it red a few years back after they put on the second and third coat it turned bright red.

  16. While I may ascribe to your theory, Jess, I would point out that it's definitely a daydream; *coughs* the husband won a disagreement of that sort *chuckles*...

Lovely leaves, and I have to say that, whoever won, that house is marvellous.

  18. Loved seeing some Chicago streetscapes there...I'm an Oak Park girl with a seriously all-pink Victorian house...now moved to NY, and gone green. Miss OP always. Happy Thanksgiving to you. xoC

  21. That house is so cool. It would be incredible in hot pink. I can't quite imagine it though. Lot's of people here in Morocco paint their homes turquoise blue, which is really nice, too.

  22. GREAT photos.. i love the house red, too. i hope to have a colourful house one day. much like those in the maritimes. Oh how i love them!

how did you get the rounded edges on your photos?

  23. I put a rounded vector mask on them in Photoshop to mask off the corners, then saved them off as jpgs.

  26. Here's another theory about the pink to red phenomenon.
It could be a matter of a metamerism, whereby a color appears quite differently under various light sources.
Ever chose a paint chip under fluorescent lights at the hardware store, then get it home to discover it looks completely different in natural or incandescent lighting?
    Yup, that's a metamerism.

  27. Does metamarism explain why colors, especially fall colors, seem so vivid on a wet day? Or is it just that sunny days wash the colors out, and on rainy days we see them at full intensity? Just wondering...
The colors in these photos are wonderful.
