Cut paper votive holder project
Several weeks ago while browsing at Blick, I found Canson self-adhesive paper on clearance. Didn't know there was such a thing, but I thought it could come in handy for something. Especially since a pack was only 99 cents. So here's a little project I made with it. The really complicated instructions are: draw some shapes on the paper backing side, cut them out, peel off the backing, and stick the shapes on a glass candle holder. Voila! The paper is somewhat thick, so I'm noticing a few of the points have unstuck themselves just a bit at the tips, but it still looks pretty and you can't tell unless you put your nose up to it. Which you wouldn't want to do anyhow, since you might singe your nosehair.
You could make a bunch of these, each with a letter on them to spell somebody's name for their birthday. Or put simple hearts on them for a romantic candlelight dinner with your sweetie. Lots of options.

oohhh. how do you always come up with such good ideas? im jealous :) i wish you posted this a few hours ago when i was at walmart..i have a bunch of ugly glass candle holders........i bet self stick wallpaper would work well too...you could come up with some interesting patterns!
Good idea. Or contact paper, if you could find something attractive in a solid color. Or woodgrain could be interesting. Easier to cut than what I used, too.
i was just looking through all your projects....your bedroom matches my company colors :P i miss having money to blow on cool craft stuff....the last thing ive done creatively is painted bamboo on my guest room walls :P.........
i love all your patterns and projects...they make me want to do them all even though i have no place for any of them. i printed out all those paper plants to put together one day...my printer HATES me...and the plants and cube monkey are just sitting on my office bookshelf :(
Wow, wonderful idea! I have so many plain glass vases and things lying around. I need to find me some of that adhesive paper.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing your great idea.
Clever idea, I love it :)
Such a cute idea! I'm totally putting a link to this on my blog.
Great Idea I didn't know Canson made that either!
Hmmm... I do a similar project w/ tissue paper with my students. This would be neater and quicker, with less clean up!
what a great idea! The holders you made look fantastic! So many possibilities to customize things for all types of party themes!
what a great idea! what a difference some paper makes.
This reminded me that I have sticker paper lying around and I also have old candle holders lying around as well.
Awesome.
I've also done this with tissue paper and Mod Podge. I cut out sea critters and kelpy bits in fun colours. Then I cut out one large navy blue strip to cover the whole thing. It looks navy blue when unlit, and when lit you see the whole ocean!
Great Idea! Now I have an excuse to keep eating Nutella! The glasses left over after the yummy stuff it's all gone are piling up ... it's getting quite scary!
Hey, this is cool. I was recently experimenting with embossing an image on a glass votive. I like your idea - it's less messy than dealing with embossing powder.
i love this! will try it as soon as i can get myself sticky paper. Good idea for a romantic dinner :D
What an easy and attractive way to personalize the votive holders to a party theme or an occasion. I have to give it a try.
Your design is handsome. People should observe that you did not reproduce the exact shapes over and over. These small differences make your pieces look more natural.
I will have to get my hands on some of this wondrous and magical paper! Thank you for sharing your fantastic and really lovely ideas for it.
Beautiful

Question - it looks like you cut out the shapes with an Xacto pen. Does this really work? We have one at home and I was unable to use it with any sort of skill and my shapes just looked ugly. Could it be the blade is dull? I know it's a silly question, but I ended up using scissors (for a completely unrelated project), but would like to be able to use the Xacto pen when possible. Are there any secrets?
Hmmm... you've GOT to have a sharp blade, otherwise the paper tears or it takes more than one cut to get through it. The thinner the stuff you're cutting, the easier it is. Press hard and cut decisively. And I guess, practice? I do think it takes some getting used to.
Thanks for the quick response! I will try getting a new blade and see how it goes!
How creative and easy project
what paint do you use for glass?
I've used some by Pebeo before, but they're translucent, and I'm still looking for a good opaque paint. You could investigate these.
