How about beige?
Just kidding. This is what our guest bedroom looked like after we packed up the airbed and acquired our neighbors' used futon. As awesome as this looks, I decided we could do better.
Ta da! Here's our new "den," as we shall call it. Still functions as a guest room, but now we can use it for other things besides storing an enormous queen size Aerobed.
Here's my freehanded wall art. I learned it's enormously scary to stand in front of a freshly painted Japanese Maple wall with a loaded paintbrush in your hand. I used a white pastel pencil to make tiny marks for the top, bottom, left and right edges of where the tree should go, and then I held my breath and hoped for the best. The little canvases are 5"x5". Their design might look familiar...
I love this Ikea fabric I bought to make pillows and the wall art (I'll tell you next time how to stretch it.) And this bookcase, also from Ikea, is cool because you can put in drawer units, cupboard doors, or wicker baskets as you like. I've got a mix of drawers and baskets for crafty stuff.
Here's a little reading/writing table. And that concludes your tour of this enormous 10'x13' room.
[P.S. Remember when I was going to paint it orange? I changed my mind at the very last second and made it a dark color, just to see what it would be like. I think I love it.]
[P.P.S. To clear up a bit of confusion: the paint color on the wall is called Japanese Maple. I didn't mean it's a Japanese Maple tree. I don't know what kind of tree it is. It's just a tree.]

love the brown - are 2 or 3 walls brown? and who is the artwork by above the little writing desk?
This is beautiful. What the name of the paint color you used?
3 walls are dark (Japanese Maple by Behr, a reddish plum color) and one is light (French Taupe, but it looks like a more neutral, slightly redder version of lavender.) And I'll do a separate post soon about the art print!
i love your tree idea! small canvases seem less daunting to me than painting a large art piece.
I love that room. It's a little too dark for my personal tastes but wow, it makes me want to try it that dark!
But I love the writing desk!
(And boy, I suck at getting those letters right in the word verification.)
oooooh i'm in love!!!
I have stencils and I'm still finding it difficult to do the painting in my craft room! Of course, you have way more talent and experience than I do. Love the Japanese Maple!
gorgeous!! Will you come do mine now??
I think it looks awesome! Great job! Now your room is functional and beautiful!
I love it! It looks wonderful!
Hi Jess, I love it! I love it so much! I love the chocolate color! I love this trees. So many eyes! I think this is even better than your master room now. hmm..at least I love it so much! Can I check in sometimes?:P
Just stunning! Do you want to come over here and decorate?
oh....i dunno......there was just something about the look of the beige.....*snicker*
so cool! beautiful job.
I love the tree with the canvases. So cool.
Oh, I see all this creativity and detest myself for painting my new flat magnolia... however I guess there is nothing to stop me painting on it!h
That looks great, what an improvement! Good job on the tree, I would never have dared...
oooh, i love it! i want to paint our livingroom and we have a great big wall and i've also been thinking of some freehand artwork. great job.
Looks great - very creative!
Oh. My. Goodness.
That room is beautiful!!!
Well done!
i love it! the brown is fantastic! wow, very cool! -kb
Simply fabulous! I LOVE dark colors and that Japanese maple is spectacular. And the small canvases in the tree are amazing. I may have to borrow that idea for one of the rooms in the house we're building.
{drooling} {coveting}{lusting}{envy}{longing}
...now I must go to confession!
Just 3 words...
PHEN-OMEN-AL! It takes my breath away. Never liked futons, but that makes me want to sit and stay!
Stunning.
It's so cosy and womb-like. Love it. :-)
Oh Jess I love this room!!! I have just moved to Melbourne, Australia and I am looking for simple but effective ways to decorate the (rental) house that does not require me to paint walls, so I cannot wait to hear how you stretched the canvas and who painted that pretty picture above the desk.
OH.MY.GOSH. That is sooooooo Beautiful!! I'm instantly jealous.
I think I am in love with your room...now if I could just get my hubby on board from decor such as this...
WOW!
Could you stop by my home and help me out!
Shaun
You are amazing! I just brought my hubby over to the computer to show him, cuz I love what a fabulous gift of creativity and ability you have. It just totally transformed that room to have that color on the walls and the freehand art is incredible....I really need to paint some walls in my house...want to come over and help? You are very inspiring. :-)
Jessica, you did such a FANTASTIC job with this room. You are absolutely so inspiring. I want to re-paint our bedroom walls right now!
That is UNBELIEVABLE!! What a transformation. I adore the japanese maple colour and the tree is just wonderful!
Care to come and redo my dining room???
You can put baskets in the bookcase? cool! I should try that.
Goodness it's gorgeous! I love Ikea for fabric but never thought of sticking it on the wall.
What a fantastic room. I love the colour and the mural tree gives it that lift to keep it fresh and not dark and dreary! Well Done!
Looks gorgeous! Love the paint color and the tree art.
wow, that looks stunning. i want that tree on my wall!
wow! Way to go on that fabulous risk. It paid off. I love that you add color to your life in unusual and fabulous ways. You TOTALLY inspire, my dear!
WOW!!! It turned out so amazing I thought you were featuring a room in a magazine. Do you walk in it all the time? I would have a hard time staying out of such a fun and beautiful room. I love the colors and it pops!
I really love the tree and little canvases. I just might have to steal it for my son's room (maybe using birds, squirrels, or other tree folk instead of the fruit?).
Oh my gosh! That's beautiful!! Put me on your list of houses to decorate next!!
Wow, thanks, everybody. Jen, check into the Jones hotel any time!
Question: See that nasty digital alarm clock next to the futon? We would still like to have an alarm clock there for guests. Can anybody recommend something more attractive? I guess I just need to go shopping. Shoot, it would be lovely to get a new side table, too.
wow. wow. wow. what a beautiful room! That tree with the canvases hung is stunning, jess!! I so wish I weren't renting and could do something like this myself!
This room is fabulous!
I need to visit you more often.
And so many comments!
great job. everything looks so good! anyone would love to be your guest!
What a fabulous transformation. I'd love a tutorial on how to stretch fabric onto a canvas to use as a wall hanging! Thanks for sharing!!
yep, think I love it too...brilliant!
Oooo! I love it too! You are so stylish!
Orange might have looked nice, we may never know, but this looks fabulous. I love the tree. Wow.
Hey Jess
Are you sure we are related? LOVE your blog and LOVE you too! See you at Christmas?
Yep! Christmas! Anyway, you're so cool you can fix a bike on the front step in your pajamas. I don't know how to do that. Love you too!
The pain tcolor is greta! I lovethe tree, great job!
Love the tree on the brown walls. Looks really great.
We have the same futon which we also use as a guest bed and it is actually really comfortable.
this looks great! i am so impressed with your handpainted tree.
I love painted trees on walls! I painted the tree of life by Klimt with gold leaves in our old bedroom - it all had to be covered in white paint though because buyers don't like that sort of stuff in a property. I was really impressed with your leaves hanging on on canvas!
I know. When we ever sell the place, it's gonna have to go, I'm sure. Bummer.
Okay, so I am not really sure that you are going to read comment 57. You know, just another comment saying you are fabulous. But SERIOUSLY, you are FABULOUS. I am just so impressed with that tree. I mean I looked forever to find land in Marrakech that had trees - that's how much they mean to me. Just this morning I bough TWELVE 8 foot trees. But yours is the most special:-)
Ditto what Maryam says! This room is ridiculously fantastic. I'm inspired (too bad I'm still renting!)
Love the tree. Love it. and Love how the "pods" go with the pods in the Ikea fabric but aren't exactly the same. It's really stunning (but 58 other people have already told you that). I always paint my walls vivid colours because they make me so much happier.
You are always so creative! I "secretly" visit your site all the time, but never comment. I think I'll start. :)
I love the idea of the Japanese maple painted on the wall and then the small canvas pieces. Superb!
Your room looks beautiful. You've done a great job, it's making me feel inspired.
Thanks! And I read every single comment here, so if your comment is number 234,565,765,123 (although unlikely), I will still see it and feel thrilled. Thanks, everybody!
hOWWWW... It´s really nice...
I believe that I will visit IKEA very soon... My VISA is trembling...
That looks awesome!
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this. I love this so so much!!!
Thanks for the inspiration; you are FABULOUS!
Love, love, love the wall mural. I can see this idea being used in a variety of ways (birds, hot-air ballons?), and the tactile, 3D quality would be especially fun in a child's room. The art print is terrific, too. Thanks so much for sharing!
I've been meaning to comment that you did such an admirable job on your tree! I did one myself (pictures somewhere in my blog) and I know how scary it was to start. I was just picturing your little organic designs (on the small canvases)lined up and painted on a wall,(slightly lighter/darker color than the wall)like wallpaper. Just sayin'...
Good stuff.
I love what you've done with your guest room! Beautiful! We want to turn ours into a "den" too, rather than have it go to waste most of the time. The tree idea is fantastic. You rock!
Love love love the wall, and the choice of colors. Absolutely stunning!
Wow that is a GREAT room. I've never seen anything like your tree with little canvases, that's brilliant.
Wow- what an incredible makeover! Just found your blog and you bet I'll be back! :)
lovely! what about the ceiling? is it a dark colour as well? i never know what to do with ceilings - i dont like just painting them brilliant white
In fact, the ceiling is brilliant white. :) It was that way, and I just ignored it. Seriously I didn't give it any thought. Hmm. Maybe I ought to.
Amazing room! You are so talented! Truly an impressive transformation!
uh oh, my plain white bedroom is calling me...
A) I love Behr paint
B) I knew I wasn't crazy when I painted my small bedroom in my old house a dark purple
C) I love how the white trim really pops off the dark plum
D) What a great transformation
E) I have that exact same "side table"/TV tray!
F) Very cool thanks for sharing.
Anna
love the paint color, love it indeed. v. cool and definitely a place you can hang out in. I like the fabric on the futon too. the pattern is simple yet unique looking. v. nice.
I love it! Just came to this blog by coincidence and have founded very inspirational...Just signed up for art classes during my maternity leave!
