Sugarcoat It Studio modern cakes
One thing I'd never imagined: a cake version of one of my fabrics. This amazing confection was crafted by Krista Markell of Sugarcoat It Studio. Krista says she swiped a cutting of fabric from a friend and held onto it for the perfect cake — which turned out to be the one she made for her own birthday party. Here's the fabric:
Here's the cake:
Krista, a former marketing director in the world of modern furniture, runs a bakery near Berkeley. I just about fell off my chair when I saw the other amazing, graphic cakes she makes. Have a look!
If you're a brave soul who would like to try making your own cake decorated with fondant, here's a tutorial from Make It and Love It in three parts: one, two, three.

I have loved all the stuff made with your awesome fabrics but this just takes the cake! Awesome
Oh my gosh, I can't believe I didn't think of that pun. I totally would have used it. Well done, Erin.

What a pretty cake. I'm so glad you posted this. I'm baking a cake tonight and I'm going to decorate it tomorrow for my aunt's graduation party. This gives me some great ideas!
WOW!!! But she didn't invite you to the party? Or even send you a piece of leftover cake?!! Bummer.
;-)

WOW!! That's amazing!!
I crave for a piece of these gorgeously modern cakes. The colors and design are beautiful.
wow!! so cool
I think they're too awesome to eat! You'd have to just preserve it somehow. :)
Love it! I spotted your fabric over at Scoutie Girl blog in a "best of the bricks" post.

That is amazing!!
You can now purchase the Cricut, which was originally developed for paper, in a "cake" version where you can program in this kind of design, feed the actual fondant through it and it will cut out the design. Out of fondant. I think that is also amazing.
Wow, I could make a cake covered with silhouettes of Alex's head if I so desired. Ha. That would be weird.
I actually said, "Wow, how cool!" out loud when I saw these. So neat!
Wow! How could you eat that?!?
That has to be one of the most beautiful cakes I've seen.
oh wow! i wouldn't be able to eat these, would cry to cut into it!! x
That is soooo pretty! You HAVE to love being honored through cake! YUM!
Wow, that would be the perfect career for a pattern and cake lover like me! :-)
Haha, that cake is to cute!
I love your fabrics, but they might even be even better as cake! Love this!
I love the cakes! That flower one on the bottom left is my favorite. Finally cakes that are unique and modern, and not cheesy. You're fabric looks so good in fondant!
Wow! Soooo cute!
Yipee! So happy to see that you blogged about this!!! :)
It's such a beautiful cake and a beautiful print too!
Freaky great is all I can say!
Janice, are you the Janice who emailed me with this cake sighting in the first place? THANKS!!
Yup...i'm the one!! :)
I can spot your fabric a mile away!
OH MY!!!! This is so very cool -- DROOL!!!!
brings a totally new perspective on dieting :))
Now that is cool (and probably delish too)!

Amazing! I would be forever flattered to have a cake made out of my designs! (Or fabric to be made out of my fondant designs, for that matter!)
By the way, I know you have no control over this, but my no-spam word verification is "fartying." Best one yet.
how flattering! that is totally awesome! love the fabric, love the cake!!!
that is amazing!!! i'm sure you are super proud to see your fabric in such a sweet version...
Holy Fondant Batman! That is amazing.
I think these must be the best looking cakes I have ever seen. Gorgeous. Beautiful fabric from you of course.

Those cakes are amazing!!!!
Beautiful cake! I've always wondered about cakes decorated this way...they look great, but do they taste good? What does fondant taste like and is it easy to cut through?
wow, amazing! This would totally work for a boy's first birthday, right? right?? Because I want to make that so badly!
I make my own fondant, since I find it tastes better, anonymous. And it's pretty easy to cut through.
wow that's one gorgeous cake!!
I've watched a show on cake decoration and I found out it's not an easy work. You really need creativity and effort to pull of a beautiful masterpiece. And with that, I salute you.
I have recently taken up baking and cake decorating and that cake is lovely! I think using an idea from a fabric is awesome! I bet it makes you feel nice to see people getting inspiration from your fabrics!

I love pattern. I love fabric. I love cake.
Doesn't get much better than this.
Oh, I bet it is so hard to make the first cut into such a beautiful creation. Edible art always makes me a little anxious...it's just so {fleetingly} perfect! One more reason I could never be a pasty chef or cake artist.
That is gorgeous!!
WOW, that cake looks AMAZING. My sister is a trained pastry chef but she hates working with fondant because she says it doesn't taste good. She'd rather focus on flavor over form. When I see amazing cakes like this one though, it makes me wish she liked experimenting with fondant a bit more!
The cakes look cool!
I'm also a fan of the cherry-blossom type of cakes with fondant

In the links you've posted about the fondant, the guest blogger there uses a ready/bought one (even though she says she herself like making a marshmallow one...) Recently I found a recipe about home-made fondant using marshmallows but I'm still a chicken to try the recipe out...

Truly stunning cake, the detail is amazing.
So gorgeous!
oh wow so fun!
Krista's cakes are not only beautiful, but they are delicious! I have been lucky enough to sample them (a few times) and she is truly an artist AND a great baker.
