Sebastiano Ercoli and Alessandro Garlandini have made another template for a DIY recycled cardboard project, part of their series for Comieco. This time it's a cell phone holder you hang on the plug-in adapter to hold your phone while it charges. It doesn't cost anything, and travels easily! I made this one from the back cover of a notebook.

Hate to be a killjoy, but wouldn't hanging cardboard between the prongs of your charger and the outlet present a major fire hazard?
ReplyDeleteI thought the exact same thing. Really cool idea, but doesn't seem safe.
ReplyDeleteDespite the criticism, I really like your blog!
Thanks. As with anything, proceed at your own risk! :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great idea!
ReplyDeleteYou could also use those plastic tabbed dividers that go in binders, or some notebooks have plastic covers.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea, and so simple! I think I'd make the 'hanging hole' larger so it could sit on (around?) the adapter. That would eliminate any potential fire hazard.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the idea!
HA! I didn't even think of the fire hazard. I just saw it and thought "HOW COOL! And It's PURPLE!"
ReplyDeleteLet's see now... with this cell phone charger thingy, the paper in the votive candle holders, and the lights on your silver Christmas tree... your place is set to explode in flames! Better have 911 on your speed dial! ;)
ReplyDeleteMum
Yeah, I like to live dangerously. Don't forget the lamp cord that runs underneath our living room rug.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah... that cord! Ack!! Better have the fire dept. on stand-by!
ReplyDeleteYou and your mum are funny!
ReplyDeleteI really loved ur home and ready to be adopted!! Love u all!
ReplyDelete+ There were another diy involving a phone charger and it was like a small box witout lid. I think this one is more simple, no box-y thing around. -I still didnt finish that english course i killed language,ok-
See u!!
You could easily solve the fire issue, just get some sticky velcro and modify their pattern a little so it hangs off the transformer (bit that plugs into the wall). Create an extra fold at the top, remove the hole in the pattern and whoa-la! Safe and fire-free (ish)
ReplyDeleteWhat about the cardboard collar inside a lamp socket.....
ReplyDeleteWhat about using a fun-foam sheet instead of cardboard?
ReplyDeleteyou could use paint chip strips from paint depts. I will make a plastic template and take it with me to see if the strips are long enough. may have to modify it just a tad (mauh) Liz
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this post. I want to let you know that I posted a link to your blog in CBH Digital Scrapbooking Freebies (please, notice the new url for my blog), under the Page 2 post on Jul. 18, 2012. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteA bit of cultural background: Italian homes are equipped with circuit breakers, outlets are grounded and all cabling is fireproof. Fire caused by lights (or christmas trees cathing fire) or outlets are unheard of in Italy. Not to mention Italian homes are not made of wood. This is why such a design would be considered pretty safe.
ReplyDeleteDangerous advice right here.
DeleteWhat a super smart idea, I'll definitely have to use this!
ReplyDeleteyeah! it's simple and smart and looks like a super cool gadget to have :) and thats true - you and your mum are funny :)
ReplyDeleteI have a bunch of colorful plastic binder dividers. Using that material would be more durable and allay fears of combustion!

HEy i loved this idea! I'm definitely gonna give it a try! That fire thing scared me a lil bit acually but i'll try to make that part stand on the charger, i mean out side of the charger. Hope i could explain ^_^
ReplyDeletei also shared this awesome idea here on my blog, of course linking back to ur page ;)

Great Idea, I wish had seen this before I went on vacation, which I just returned from.
ReplyDeleteI thought of the fire issue but if made out of plastic folders (which I have a lot of sitting around) no problem.
The more I thought of the plugs I don't see it being a real fire issue unless the plug shorted, most US homes are grounded, paper and plastic are not conductive.
smart idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! And paper is an insulator so there's no worry about it catching on fire just from sitting there. :)

Fire safe or not, I think this is freakin awesome! My phone only charges if the cord is in at a certain angle, and I think this design might just allow that to happen! Will be trying it... :D
ReplyDeleteWhether cardboard or plastic this is a fire hazard. Would strongly suggest removing this from your site as it could be cause of a lawsuit if someone should do this and their house catches on fire.
ReplyDeleteBecause just plugging it up and laying it on a table (or nearby piece of furniture) is way too simple....
ReplyDeleteProne to falls by sliding. It needs closed boundaries at the sides. The rest seems OK to me.
ReplyDeleteHey, just a little tip - if you use a pen that's run out of ink, or a letter opened and a ruler and "draw" across that line where you're supposed to fold in half (whether on cardboard or fun foam), it REALLY helps, rather than just bending it on it's own. Just and idea to make life easier. Thanks for the great idea and the template!
