Recycle cardboard into a DIY cell phone charging holder

Sebastiano Ercoli and Alessandro Garlandini have made another template for a DIY recycled cardboard project, part of their series for Comieco. This time it's a cell phone holder you hang on the plug-in adapter to hold your phone while it charges. It doesn't cost anything, and travels easily! I made this one from the back cover of a notebook.

Watch their fun how-to video with sound effects and download the PDF template here.

  1. Hate to be a killjoy, but wouldn't hanging cardboard between the prongs of your charger and the outlet present a major fire hazard?

  2. I thought the exact same thing. Really cool idea, but doesn't seem safe.
Despite the criticism, I really like your blog!

  3. Thanks. As with anything, proceed at your own risk! :)

  4. You could also use those plastic tabbed dividers that go in binders, or some notebooks have plastic covers.

  5. This is a great idea, and so simple! I think I'd make the 'hanging hole' larger so it could sit on (around?) the adapter. That would eliminate any potential fire hazard.
    Thanks for the idea!

  6. HA! I didn't even think of the fire hazard. I just saw it and thought "HOW COOL! And It's PURPLE!"

  11. You could easily solve the fire issue, just get some sticky velcro and modify their pattern a little so it hangs off the transformer (bit that plugs into the wall). Create an extra fold at the top, remove the hole in the pattern and whoa-la! Safe and fire-free (ish)

  13. What about using a fun-foam sheet instead of cardboard?

  14. you could use paint chip strips from paint depts. I will make a plastic template and take it with me to see if the strips are long enough. may have to modify it just a tad (mauh) Liz

  16. A bit of cultural background: Italian homes are equipped with circuit breakers, outlets are grounded and all cabling is fireproof. Fire caused by lights (or christmas trees cathing fire) or outlets are unheard of in Italy. Not to mention Italian homes are not made of wood. This is why such a design would be considered pretty safe.

  19. I have a bunch of colorful plastic binder dividers. Using that material would be more durable and allay fears of combustion!

  22. Great Idea, I wish had seen this before I went on vacation, which I just returned from.

I thought of the fire issue but if made out of plastic folders (which I have a lot of sitting around) no problem.
The more I thought of the plugs I don't see it being a real fire issue unless the plug shorted, most US homes are grounded, paper and plastic are not conductive.

  23. This is a great idea! And paper is an insulator so there's no worry about it catching on fire just from sitting there. :)

  24. Fire safe or not, I think this is freakin awesome! My phone only charges if the cord is in at a certain angle, and I think this design might just allow that to happen! Will be trying it... :D

  25. Whether cardboard or plastic this is a fire hazard. Would strongly suggest removing this from your site as it could be cause of a lawsuit if someone should do this and their house catches on fire.

  26. Because just plugging it up and laying it on a table (or nearby piece of furniture) is way too simple....

  27. Prone to falls by sliding. It needs closed boundaries at the sides. The rest seems OK to me.

  28. Hey, just a little tip - if you use a pen that's run out of ink, or a letter opened and a ruler and "draw" across that line where you're supposed to fold in half (whether on cardboard or fun foam), it REALLY helps, rather than just bending it on it's own. Just and idea to make life easier. Thanks for the great idea and the template!
