Giveaway: The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer

Maybe you splurged on a digital SLR camera, imagining yourself taking dreamy photos like a pro. Except that you haven't quite gotten around to learning how, so your camera is permanently stuck on the auto setting. You know you can do better... but how? If that's you, Katie Evans' new e-book, The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer, will help you show that camera who's boss.

Katie writes in a conversational style that's friendly and accessible, and won't make you throw yourself off a bridge when you read about f-stops and shutter speeds. Topics include types of lenses, exposure, settings, lighting, how to get subjects to relax and act like normal people, composing pictures, and fixing up your photos using software. Some of my favorite tips are:
• How to get your subject's eyes to look sparkly instead of dull
• How to make a DIY clip for your camera's flash to minimize the harsh edges you usually get
• How to make a so-so photo great with a few editing tricks

Win a free copy
Katie is giving away five free e-books, each a $35 value. Want one? Leave a comment here with your email address or other way of contacting you. And mention something interesting you'd like to photograph. (I'm betting 70% of the answers will be kids, but we'll see.) Five winners will be selected, contacted, and announced in this post. Giveaway closes at midnight CT on Friday, Sept. 30th.

Get a discount
Interested in purchasing a book? Enter the code ORANGE at checkout and get $5 off the e-book, now through Oct. 7th.

Update: The giveaway is now closed. Congrats to lucky random winners Robyn, Britt, Jolkipalki, Rachel, and Jessica! They've been contacted and will be soon be taking better pictures.

I would love this ebook, and we would love a camera too. I would photography the first year of my Miracle Baby's life, Lillian Marcella. I had to spend over 140 days in the hospital in order for her to be born. Her dad and I were told neither she nor I would survive if we continued the pregnancy back in April 2011, but we did not give up and we on September 9, 2011 she was born. She is very small but other wise she is just a perfect baby. She is in the NICU, but will come home soon. We take her picture each day with an old camerat that I bought many, many years ago. We don't have money for a new one since I haven't worked for the past 6 six months and her dad is a stay at home dad,so the camera would be put to great use. If we get are lucky enough to receive the book I'll learn how to take better pictures of Lillian Marcella and her twin brother and sister who are just one. Thanks so much for the chance!

Definitely loving this giveaway! I've always tried to understand the jargon used by photographers to help make my photography better but always fail completely! Though this book could be the one to finally fix that problem.
I have to photograph models I make for my interior design and architecture degree to put into my portfolio and assignments so I'd love to know how to make the photos look even better!

Hello, I would like to see if this ebook will make it easy for me (a newbie) to understand how to choose a DSLR camera and terms like aperture, focal distance, telephoto etc.

I fit the 70% profile for taking pictures of my children :)

I also want to learn to take photos of my wife's handmade cards, so she can show them on her website.

My tools for now are a compact camera, a diy tripod made out of a plastic bottle and also a diy light made from a desk lamp, but I will buy a DSLR camera as soon as my budget permits.

I don't have any kids so that's not my answer!
I would actually really love to photograph my boyfriend's band without feeling like an awkward dope because I don't really know what I'm doing and maybe this will work out and maybe it won't!

Taking a picture of a monkey in a Ferrari... kind of a dream come true! The book could help that the picture won't be blurry. Maybe I should start searching for that talented, rich monkey...

Pick me, pick me!

After months of anticipation (and saving), I bought my first DSLR a couple of months ago and take it with me everywhere.

I photograph things that inspire me - everyday scenes, people, the beach, the sky, my dog, old buildings.

Anything and everything!

So, this sounds like the book for me :)
