Ad space now available

Maybe that's what you're thinking if you just noticed that little "Sponsors" section in the upper right corner over there. After a little research and months of waffling, I've decided to offer some advertising space on How About Orange. If I can help good businesses promote their quality goods and services, and at the same time, introduce interesting or helpful things to you readers, that might be nice. Not to mention, help fund my craft habit so I can make more tutorials for you. Let's try it.

  1. Ads on design blogs don't bother me much at all. I look at them like link lists...they're great starting points for surfing.

It's only when they cycle too fast through their animations that I try to avoid them. It bugs my eyes. (Hint, hint...LOL)

  2. As in, the JCaroline ad is going to give you a seizure? :)

  3. That is funny... They do cycle fast, but I don't really mind. I find some of the best sites from design/art/craft blogs. Plus, I am a former ad exec so it rather makes me happy to see advertising. Strange, I know.

  4. Good luck with your adds! I think they look very nice and dont at all take from your page.

  5. Yes!
    As other commenters have said,
sometimes ads are great places for new design and craft sources.

And if it helps fund your crafty ways, I'm all for it.

    (Love your blog!)

  6. at least you aren't posting things like "OMG! I just used XYZ Widgets and they are the BEST most AWESOME Widgets ever!" and taking a check for it.

i don't mind the ads at all... if you can make money off of your blog and still be ethical, do it!

Plus, like Nicole said, it's fun to see ads on blogs for things that you actually want to hear from.

  7. Well, I might still occasionally say "OMG! I just used XYZ Widgets and they are the BEST most AWESOME Widgets ever!" but if I do that, it is absolutely an unpaid endorsement!

  8. I dont mind ads at all if they are fitting to your blog. I just hate the horrible text ads that just make a mess of your blog! Which of course Im sure you are too cool for those! :)

  9. I'm glad you're able to make some money off of the work you do for us. More power to you. :)

  10. No, the J Caroline ad isn't going to give me a seizure (not even a migraine, which is far more likely in my case).

The hint was more of a future hint, since I'm sure all sorts of advertisers will be lining up to buy space on your blog.

  11. You know, if anyone has to worry about your sponsoring ads causing seizures...

Since, so far, no problems have occurred, I think it safe to say I can continue visiting your b$#F|$FV~@$ER>>>>>>

  12. I've been wondering for a long time when you might start offering ad space. I think it's a great idea. You have the rankings, we all know that an the traffic. It's an opportunity and you may as well take advantage of it while it's here.

I have no doubt everything will fit in fine with the rest of you layout. And yes it is a nice way to find new sites and for others to get noticed. Sounds good to me.

  13. I have no problem with people offering ad space on their blogs. You put a lot of effort into what you post here, why shouldn't you get some monetary compensation! Plus, I too like the "hey I never knew about that before" ads...

  14. Good luck Jess. I agree with all of the rest. We trust your judgement. I have gained so much from reading your blog that I am happy you might get some money to keep it up. I would have to imagine that others feel like I do.
No seizure worries here. Other than, I might seize trying to getting everything you talk about. Oh the ribbons...

  15. Ads on design/craft/art blogs don't bother me. I regard them as public service announcements in that I am usually benefited by them.

  16. I don't mind ads either, I really like your blog and get a lot of inspiration from it - you should get compensated for your time. In fact, I even finally checked the J Caroline site and placed an order!

  17. Another yes vote here - I'm happy you can earn some money from our clicks!

  18. It's about time. I think it's appropriate. There are other blogs that offer ads that at the same time deliver CONTENT (ie. designsponge, decor8, makingitlovely, etc). Congratulations.

  19. I recently discovered your blog and I really love it. I don't mind ads as long they don't interfere with reading your posts. Sometimes you find them between posts and then it annoying. As mentioned before, often they are a real source for more info. Oh yes, I have to same question as the previous commenter. Does it help if we click?
    Bye,
    Marianne.

  20. Okay, good. I'm glad you guys aren't going to hate me now! About clicking... it will help indirectly. Advertisers will pay for a length of time, like 1 month costs X dollars. Sort of like renting a billboard. The amount they pay won't be directly tied to how many people click on the ad. BUT, if ads get lots of clicks, an advertiser will see that lots of people are heading over to their site from How About Orange, and that will make them happy and more likely to renew their ad or tell their buddies that HAO is a good place to advertise.

  21. I've actually always wondered why you didn't have ads on your site. No worries here. You go on with your "ad" self. :)

  22. i think it's great- especially since i frequent jcaroline's blog and store.

    ReplyDelete
  23. No problem whatsoever. Interesting, in fact.

Since you're reshuffling your blog a little bit, could I just point out that the headings of the last two blogroll lists on the right show up jumbled on my computer.

  24. ads are great, for both parties involved.. its only when the ads are really animated and flashy that they can bother.. but one or two flashy ones are ok ;)

Anyway, as long as it makes u money, then good for u!

  25. Bela, thanks for reporting that. I tried using 4 different browsers to see what you're seeing, but everything looks fine. Are you on a PC? What browser are you using? Anybody else out there see any weird bloggie glitches going on here? Please tell me if you see oddities!

  26. I think you're super! And your blog is awesome. And everything you make is aesthetically pleasing

  27. if taking ads means more crafty goodness from you, then take 'em, Mama, take 'em.

  28. just don't let them animate!

  29. Just emailed you about it. :-)

  30. I just noticed your etsy picks disappeared. That makes me sad because I loved looking at those and discovering new artists there through your recommendation. Which, I suppose is free advertising, but I really enjoyed it.

  31. Oh, when I was rearranging, I took it off and forgot to put it back! I'll keep it, unless it makes the page load time too slow. Thanks for reminding me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Uh oh, when I put it back, it makes some text in the sidebar titles screwed up in some people's browsers. I'll have to work on this.

  33. You have a great blog and the ads are in keeping with the overall theme of your blog.

  34. I've been thinking about selling ad space on mine too. It would only be companies that I personally endorse (and I'm very picky about where I spend my money). But, I don't near the readership you do, so it may not be worth it at this point.

Personally, I think most readers would prefer to see a few ads (and many actually appreciate the links to good companies) than to pay for tutorials and recipes that they'd rather get for free. At least I would.
