Caution: image may be disturbing to some viewers

This happened just seconds ago. There I was, innocently making teapots in Illustrator, minding my own business, when a giant fly landed on my monitor right in front of my face. My first thought was to squash it, but I didn't want guts on my monitor. My second thought was how funny this looked, and since my camera was right next to me, I took his picture. Just a little window for you into the life of a designer. I will probably delete this post soon because it is disgusting.

Okay, maybe I won't, since I see it was a big conversation starter. Who knew?

  1. you either have a very small computer screen or that is one large fly! (I have a mac too, so I'm sure it's the latter)

  2. ah...the proverbial "fly in the ointment"...sorry, couldn't help myself :)

  3. Make a fabric pattern out of it :D LOL. They used bees and dragonflies, why not just reg old flies ;-) Great blog BTW.

  4. Yeah, I should have just quickly traced around him with the pen tool, and voila!

  5. Whoa! That sucker is huuuuge. And creepy. And kinda makes me wanna yak.

  6. Bravo for snapping a pic and posting it. I recently found a disturbingly enormous slug in my backyard (so big that I thought it was something to be "scooped" when I was out picking up after my big dogs!). I wanted to blog about it, because it was so unique (I live in a desert)and gross... but I didn't want to see that image over and over on my site. I wouldn't blame you for deleting the post, but I will give you props for posting it in the first place! Definitely noteworthy ;)

  7. Oh my goodness, I'm halfway cracking up with laughter, halfway completely grossed out. So now I have to post my computer + bug photo, only mine was taken *after* the offending creature was already in the belly of the hand vacuum...

By the way, I'm totally sorry if this is the first time I've ever commented (crazy if it took a *fly* to get me to say hi!), I've got you in my Bloglines!

  8. Holy ginormous fly! Did it get clearance for takeoff when it left the room?

  9. too funny and gross heee heee

  10. I don't find it disgusting. It is just a fly. Just an animal. A living creature. And if you look at the photo it is quite a nice shot. Imagine it is not a real fly but one that you made in Illustrator. :)

  11. Wow!
I know your monitor is large,
so he must have been super big.
    Is he still alive?
    Did you smash him?

By the way, one of my students,
    2.5-year-old girl answered
"Ant." to my question what you want to be when you grow up.
    How cute she is!

  12. that is a big fly. i had one in my house for a while that would just follow me around. it really seemed he just wanted to be in the same room with me and the kids. sounds crazy, I know, but he became sort of a pet.

    btw, love those teapots!

  13. Megumi, he flew before I could decide what to do with him, and I haven't seen him since.

My coworker's daughter recently told him she wants to be a pink squirrel when she grows up.

  14. Wow. Evidence for radioactive waste contamination in the area? I wonder if he has special powers, like a Super-man fly, er, super-fly fly, er...

  15. It looks like a horsefly, the type that like to bite. One of the horses I used to ride hated them so much that when one landed on him, he would literally throw himself on the ground and thrash about to try to get rid of it.

Luckily he only bucked when I was on his back and a horsefly was bothering him. O.o

  16. Oh, dear..... now I have to worry about you being abducted by alien flies?!

I don't know if I wanna come and visit you anymore, if that's what you're raising around there! ;-)

Toooo funny! Nice to start my day with a laugh. :-)

    Happy 4th!

    Love,
    Mum

P.S. Leave the post up for awhile.... love the comments!

  17. P.P.S. Don't worry... it's not a horse fly. ;-)

  18. What actually caught my eye was that you still have Quark on your machine. Memories...

  19. Not more disgusting than the moths that land on the screen when I'm on the pc late at night in the dark. And then I do smack them. My screen takes a beating in the summertime.

  20. Update: Fly reappeared in the shower with me. Fly is deceased.

  21. Seeing you... um... like that... was too much for it, huh? ;-)

  22. lol. the posts that garner the most comments can be so unexpected, huh?

  23. He'd have definitely been dead if he was on my monitor (lol). I hate flies!
Love your site! I stumbled upon it yesterday. :-)

  24. Aww I see you finally killed it! Yes, the shower would have been the last straw! :-)

  25. that's the fly that ate new york. mostly I just noticed how much I love your little teapots.

  26. That is the biggest fly I have ever seen! How gross for you.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow! That fly is huge! You can see his little toes! ^o^

I'd name him and make him a leash and collar. ;D

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was thinking the same thing as the first commenter, Laura. Either your computer screen is teeny, or... yeeesh!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow. I would have screamed and run away. That fly is gigantic. Perhaps it is better that he is deceased. So he will not make any gigantic fly offspring.

    ReplyDelete
  30. then did you do a fly motif?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh, my! Look, you can see his giant fly feet!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. AAAGGGHHHH! That's a monster, a giant fly!!! Please don't delete this post, just for the sake of science! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Is that a horse fly? He is HUGE, but it's a great picture!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. At the time, the late unlamented fly just had to be thinking "Help me, help me, help me!"

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh man... a fly on steroids??? It's massive! Wouldn't it just be cool if Live Trace would work on objects sitting ON your screen.....

Completely OT but as a fellow graphic designer and fabric addict I was wondering if you have any insider info on how to go about getting someone to comission and produce fabric designs?

  36. one time I had one of those teeny, tiny red spider mites somehow get INSIDE my screen. It was so bizarre. You don't realize the depth that is in your screen until you watch a bug crawl BEHIND stuff on it!! Fortunately he got out before he expired.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Solveig, that would be awesome! Heh heh! And Jen, I know exactly what kind of bug you mean. That must have been really weird.

    ReplyDelete
  38. i had to laugh at myself when i read it was a REAL fly. when i saw the picture, i thought it was a clipart because it was so big. holy smokes that thing is HUGE!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I hate flies! However I won't smash it on my computer screen, it's just too gross to clean up and everytime I look at the monitor I would think of that. So, no. But I will patiently waited until it landed on a window and then grab a roll of newspaper and ... you know. Window is easier to clean than wall. Let's just say I learned my lesson. BTW, I was the renowned fly killer back in college.

  40. OMG...you can't delete it...it's completely hilarious!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. truly, um.. disturbing, but hilarious at the same time! oddly compelling too. don't tell anyone i said that about a fly.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Are you designing ribbon next?!

    ReplyDelete
  43. i dont know what i would have done as i have a policy NEVER to kill anything.

    ReplyDelete
  44. *gasp*
    This is a sign.
    A bad sign!
You'll die in seven days, I'm sorry to say.

  45. Hmmm, since I wrote this post two months ago, it looks like I'll be okay.
