I made these (just a sampling; there are more!) while watching
So You Think You Can Dance last night. I'm hosting a bridal shower here, so I had to try out Martha Stewart's
pom-pom decoration instructions. It's sooo easy. And fun. Tip: You don't need all that wire. You only need enough to wrap once around your accordian-folded stack with ends long enough to twist together. Maybe about 4 or 5 inches of wire. Or use string.
I love these! I made a whole bunch of them for my bridal shower to hang outside and they looked awesome. I made a bunch of tiny ones also (about 9" in diameter). They look so cute hanging from the inside of patio umbrellas :)
ReplyDeletecan you put twinkly lights in them and hang them up and take a picture? i was wondering what these would be like lit up...
ReplyDeleteok, just an idea, but I would love to see it!:)
Those are great... I am totally going to have to make some for our next party.
ReplyDeletestunning. I think I need some for my living room:)
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for a few weeks and haven't commented. These look great! Just wanted to say thanks for the fun ideas...
ReplyDeleteGreat to see and hear how easy these are to make. I've been thinking of making some to decorate my booth at art shows. Thanks for the tips - very helpful!
ReplyDeletei'm using mucho many of these for my backyard wedidng reception next june. question: do you buy your colored tissue paper somewhere special? i was maybe gonna order online but if theres'a place that carries specialty colors, i'd love to know about it. we're doing magenta, lime, and orange--a tropical theme since we're getting married in hawaii! (ha, tropical in minnesota).
ReplyDeleteawesome
ReplyDeleteblossom
Those are really cute!
ReplyDeleteThis paper is from Target. I bought a few packs of sheets. I think they're 18x26." I bet party stores have lots of colors. But maybe online is cheaper because you can buy in bulk?
ReplyDeleteI made these for Christmas in July. Check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/linny_t/744696708/in/set-72157600185112946/. I used a patterned paper with a plain paper and it gave a good effect.
ReplyDeleteOooh I did it too for my daughter's 2nd birthday, she came out in the morning and was very impressed with 'her flowers'. So much so that they're still around a month later- they are BIG. Much more sophisticated than streamers and balloons.
ReplyDeleteWho are your favs on So you think you can dance? I'm liking Lacey, Neil, and Sabra!
ReplyDeleteI actually bought the Martha Stewart kit at Michaels. I had never made pom poms and of course, I had to check out her merchandising. They are super easy, so now I'm wondering why they made a kit for it. The paper in her kit is 17" x 30" for the medium and 20" x 30" for the large, 11 sheets for each pom folded in 1 7/8" accordian folds. You're right, you only need 6" of wire. (My kit had already been robbed of its wire, so I used some 24 guage Colourcraft.)
ReplyDeleteFound tons of colors of tissue at USBox that might help the Hawaiian wedding-- http://www.usbox.com/Tissue/colored_tissue.htm
They sell to the public, but their minimum order is $100. But you can get 480 sheets for $30.
This is great info! Thanks, Caroline.
ReplyDeleteCrafting... AND So You Think You Can Dance? Sounds like a fun night to me!
ReplyDeleteyours look great. i made some for a wedding i decorated for and everyone loved them.
ReplyDeleteI'm SO making these for my wedding.
ReplyDeleteWhere would we all be without good old Martha!
ReplyDeletei'm always looking for lovely non-cheesy shower ideas. please post pics of the coming bash... i'm anxious to see what a "how about orange" shower will look like!
ReplyDeletelove, lindsay
Gorgeous dahling!
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to try those!!
ReplyDeleteLinda
Those look amazing!
ReplyDeletethanks for the help!!!
ReplyDeleteWow...the bigger, the better! They look awesome.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these. I forgot all about these. I have a bridal shower to through in January. Great Idea!
ReplyDeleteoooo- very nice! These look amazing and Martha just knows what to offer these days!
ReplyDeleteso who do you think is going to win the dancing show?
I think Danny is the best dancer, followed by Sabra. I just wish they had a little more spark to their personalities. I want them to be more likeable and charismatic. But I like Sara and Neil MORE, and I don't know why. Lacey and Lauren overact. And that's my completely ignorant, uneducated opinion! :)
ReplyDeleteMan, we made those things at summer day camp when I was like 8 - and Martha Stewart thinks she's got something new.
ReplyDeleteThese are great, we made them for my cousin's wedding. We had two days to plan. We could not find the color tissue paper we wantedso we bought toule and they came out beautiful even more elegant than the paper ones.
ReplyDeleteIt was the very fine kind mixed with the stiff netting.
aren't the the most fun. last year I wrapped all my christmas presents in brown craft and got fun holiday tissue and made halfs for the tops of all the boxes. my family went NUTS! totally fun. LOVE your website by the way. I'm in bloggy love right now.
ReplyDeleteThat's a GREAT idea! I wanna do that next Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI love your pom poms. I hope it's ok if I reference your blog on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to do pom poms over our head table at my Nov 1 wedding. We haven't attempted them yet- but you just gave me hope- THANKS and love your blog!
You can do it! (A tip: if they don't open up full enough for your taste, you can use one or two more sheets of tissue paper. Someone wrote me who was having trouble with that, and this solution worked.) You'll have fun. Congratulations on your marriage!
ReplyDeleteI made those for my daughter's birthday party. I saw Martha's at Walmart then remembered we used to make these for prom night. ha!
ReplyDeleteThey are absolutely beautiful. This grandma is going out to buy the tissue paper and make ouddles of them for all to see.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
God Bless,
Anne
So sad, these look so beautiful and everyone seems to think they are very easy..
ReplyDeleteI looked for the website but its been taken off. so sad..
You can find the new link here
ReplyDeleteThanks, SewDelish! I updated the post.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! I'm planning an eco-friendly 1st birthday party for my daughter and was looking for alternatives to non-environment friendly balloons. I think this may be it! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool idea! Another way you could do it (without Martha Stewart, if you felt like being more independently minded) is leaf through some of the pictures on http://www.gatheringguide.com/ec/party_favors_decorations.html and see what ideas you get. That's what I do and I've ended up with some great things.
ReplyDeleteMartha Steward didn't come up with is idea. These flowers have been used for weddings in Mexico for a very long time.
ReplyDeleteWe are throwing a party to celebrate my daughter's 3rd birthday and my 27th (actually 36th) birthday and I was going to make fabric pom poms which I am sure that I had seen on your site (perhaps not) but when I found these I decided that they would look fab!
ReplyDeleteI have made three different sizes as a test run and I am so pleased with how they look. I now have a growing pile of ready prepared ones that we can fluff out on the day.
TIP: fold more than one layer of tissue paper at a time and separate them before wrapping the wire around the middle. That way you are cutting down on your folding time!
