A mini housewarming gift

My pal Megumi in Japan sent me a package. Along with pretty tapes, stationery, a t-shirt, and a Celia Birtwell scarf from Uniqlo, she included a housewarming item: a mini 3" dustpan and... bloom? I'm hoping it will cause tiny flowers to sprout throughout the house.

I totally laughed out loud! :D You gotta love the funny Japanese typos and translations. My sisters and I would buy shirts and gifts when we visited Japan simply for the fact that the English didn't make sense. Haha!

Alex was given a hand-me-down shirt from a kindly Japanese relative that said "Let's swimming!" We still use that phrase as much as possible.

A little bloom! How fun!! :) Nice of her to send you a gift, since she didn't show up for the painting. ;) Come to think of it, she didn't miss any latte-made-by-Alex. Oh well, Starbucks did okay, I guess.

Actually those are really handy to have around the house. I have picked them up at the 99 cent store and stash them under most cupboards and even one in the car.

Also, I really want a T-shirt that says "Let's swimming" now Jessica!

We loved lots of things about being stationed in Japan. One of them was the cute translations. One night we were riding the train home from a restaurant and there was a nicely dressed woman wearing a t-shirt that said "Original Nice Souvenir." We still reference that 20 years later. I miss Japan and the adorable and useful items they have (like a toilet seat sock to keep the seat warm in the winter. Really! Wish I had one every January).

BWAHAHAHAHA! I love this! I have such fun going to sites that feature failed Engrish translation. Thanks for the laugh. = ^ )

The cutest typo! The "Let's swimming" made me think of another funny typo that I read in an airport toilet. It said: "Please keep cleaning". Good advice for any traveler, I'd say :D

We don't have R sound in Japanese, so it's always confusing. Actually even I didn't notice it until Jess told me. When we walked around in Tokyo, we found a super sophisticated hospital, saying "HOPSITAL" so Jess and I took a photo there! That's our memory. I keep typing funny English and make her laugh, I guess.

Granma G, sorry, my summer break has just started today, so I couldn't make it! I wanted the package to arrive while you were staying. Did you paint all the walls in her house? Any space left for me? I should find some funny LoRRers or bLushes!

Grandma G said...

We missed you, Megumi! But we only painted 3 rooms, so there's plenty left for you to do. :) Yes, LoRRers and bLushes would be awesome! :)

I don't think I ever heard the hopsital story. Or maybe I did and just don't remember. But I love it! :)

Oh, the Hopsital. It was wonderful. A gorgeous, high-end sign out front... misspelled. Terrific!

it's good luck (at least in the UK!) to give a new broom/dustpan as a housewarming gift, as it is bad luck to bring an old broom to a new house. :)

I had no idea! Well then, I lucked out. We threw out our old broom before we moved and bought a new one here, and received this tiny gift.
