DIY macaron coin purse

An addendum to the list of things to sew in the last post: check out these little macaron coin purses. One hundred percent adorable! I want to eat them up. Get the instructions here from Joanne at Craft Passion. You know her. She's the same genius who provided directions for the self-zipping coin purse.

    These are beyond adorable and perfect valentine presents for kids. Unfortunately my hand sewing would never hold up.

    So today I learned there is such a thing as a macaron. I've only seen macaroons before, and a google image search of macaroons yields something that looks exactly like these coin purses.

    I assumed Joann's post had a typo in it, silly me! So, friends, what is the difference between a macaron and a macaroon?

    They are both useful and sweet! Meanwhile, I sent my daughter the link to the Outside Oslo fabric collection with the subject line "you'll be breathless" and she wrote back, "I already made pillows with that fabric!" I should have known, she has excellent taste!

    I think these might have migrated from Japan, I have seen loads of here, first appearing maybe 6-9 months ago and macaroons seemed to take over from cup cakes, the Japanese sure like a fad craze :o)

    Hm, I'd say a macaron is one of those teeny-weeny trendy little coloured meringue doobries and what those purses look like. And over here (UK) a macaroon is much bigger and sort of somewhere between a biscuit (that's a cookie to you) and a cake. Often with rice paper underneath and a cherry on top. The most common variety seems to be the coconut macaroon and very tasty it is too. I think you get almond ones too. The Wikipedia entry for Macaroon doesn't reflect my English macaroon experience 100% but might give you some idea. And uh-oh, Grandma G is looking a bit mutinous...

    I'm French, so I'm very familiar with macarons. Put the word 'macaron' in Google Images and you will return a whole page of wonderfully colourful pictures of macarons. These little cakes are not only delicious-looking, they are scrumptious: they melt in the mouth. Some of the best ones are made by Ladurée. My favourite flavours are Rose and Salted Caramel, but Pistachio is gorgeous too, and Blackcurrant and Raspberry... LOL!

    The little purses are spot on!

    Jess, my mum (who has agreed to make me a 2 Zip Hipster thanks to you!) has been VERY pleased with the little purses I made her using the Slouchy Make-up Bag pattern from flossieteacakes.blogspot.com, and it's not too difficult or time-consuming... But don't tell Grandma G that... Also I think designing the fabric yourself should count for *something*, right?!

    Great! Thanks for the pattern tip. Grandma G doesn't wear a lick of makeup, but I could make this for someone else sometime... or GG could store cat toys in it. Or tea bags. Or sewing notions, like zippers. To use on more bags for me. Heh heh.

    macaroons are those disgusting cookies full of shredded coconut. GROSS. macarons are wonderful little airy, slightly chewy cookies made with almond flour and egg whites. they're served sandwiched together with delicious fillings like salted caramel, lemon curd, chocolate ganache, and just about everything else you can imagine. you must try!

    I'm not a make-uppy sort either but you can keep all manner of things in those purses. I also scaled the pattern pieces up to make a wash-bag - keep meaning to blog that. Certainly is a good thing Grandma G never reads the comments, or we'd never have gotten away with this.

    I copied the instructions, reformatted them, and printed them out. Now all I have to do is make it. I have been wanting to make a hard sided container that zips. Past attempts at doing so have failed. Miserably. Thanks for the link!
