Giveaway: The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer

Maybe you splurged on a digital SLR camera, imagining yourself taking dreamy photos like a pro. Except that you haven't quite gotten around to learning how, so your camera is permanently stuck on the auto setting. You know you can do better... but how? If that's you, Katie Evans' new e-book, The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer, will help you show that camera who's boss.

Katie writes in a conversational style that's friendly and accessible, and won't make you throw yourself off a bridge when you read about f-stops and shutter speeds. Topics include types of lenses, exposure, settings, lighting, how to get subjects to relax and act like normal people, composing pictures, and fixing up your photos using software. Some of my favorite tips are:
• How to get your subject's eyes to look sparkly instead of dull
• How to make a DIY clip for your camera's flash to minimize the harsh edges you usually get
• How to make a so-so photo great with a few editing tricks

Win a free copy
Katie is giving away five free e-books, each a $35 value. Want one? Leave a comment here with your email address or other way of contacting you. And mention something interesting you'd like to photograph. (I'm betting 70% of the answers will be kids, but we'll see.) Five winners will be selected, contacted, and announced in this post. Giveaway closes at midnight CT on Friday, Sept. 30th.

Get a discount
Interested in purchasing a book? Enter the code ORANGE at checkout and get $5 off the e-book, now through Oct. 7th.

Update: The giveaway is now closed. Congrats to lucky random winners Robyn, Britt, Jolkipalki, Rachel, and Jessica! They've been contacted and will be soon be taking better pictures.

Anyway, I'd say I mainly take photos of details (particulars of daily life or of places I visit, still-life, sometimes also insects or flowers), whereas I'm really poor at taking photos of people.

There's always so much to learn when talking about photography.

When on holidays I always have the same standard two or three poses I use when photographing my friends, and all the pictures look quite the same. I want fresh, new ideas of how photographing them on trips.

Also how to take photographs when at a party. Before I manage to get the manual settings right, the fun moment has already passed and that is frustrating (on manual mode cause on Auto the pics don't always look natural). Have no idea how to use the A/P mode.

This e-book looks like it's exactly what I need! I, of course, like to take pictures of my little guy but I just want to learn how to take great photographs of anything (be it a sewing project, a pretty flower or friends and family)

Thanks for doing the giveaway!

I love this blog! My friend told me about it recently because I LOVE orange. I've gone a little crazy with it in the past, so I'm trying to use it in smaller doses now so it's more appreciated. Ah, the book. I would love this book. What I take a lot of pics of are my orange things and other craft and decorating projects around the house. Just last night I tried taking a pic with my Rebel of a canvas I painted orange and I tried out all the different lighting options and still couldn't get it right. I'd love to know how to get it right when photographing things indoors.

Love! Want!! I just moved from the west coast to the east coast and I'm trying to think of new and creative ways to share my insights and new experiences with my friends and family. This book will definitely help me capture what I'm experiencing.

Thanks so much!

This is such a great giveaway! It seems like such a practical book that teaches the ins and outs of photography for beginners. I would like to capture relationships between people and things that they love... other people, pets, exercise, cigarettes.. whatever they love...

I would love to have this book! I am a first year Photography teacher and need to build my collection of books so I have some great resources. What I would really like to do is create a camera obscura in my classroom and capture the projection with photo paper, like a large pin hole camera but allow myself and my students to be inside the camera.

Sounds like a great book! I love taking pictures of wild mushrooms that grow alongside the nautre trails where I live, in Prince Edward Island. They grow in strange places, such as tiny crevices in tree trunks, and have such wonderful details. I might be weird, but I think that mushrooms are beautiful! I would love to learn to photograph them better.

I want the Eboko ..... The reason is that I want to capture the stories around me, I feel that everything has a story, but sometimes I do not know how I can express that in a photograph, I think the e-book can help to reflect the histories
