Giveaway: The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer

Maybe you splurged on a digital SLR camera, imagining yourself taking dreamy photos like a pro. Except that you haven't quite gotten around to learning how, so your camera is permanently stuck on the auto setting. You know you can do better... but how? If that's you, Katie Evans' new e-book, The Key to Taking Pictures Like a Professional Photographer, will help you show that camera who's boss.

Katie writes in a conversational style that's friendly and accessible, and won't make you throw yourself off a bridge when you read about f-stops and shutter speeds. Topics include types of lenses, exposure, settings, lighting, how to get subjects to relax and act like normal people, composing pictures, and fixing up your photos using software. Some of my favorite tips are:
• How to get your subject's eyes to look sparkly instead of dull
• How to make a DIY clip for your camera's flash to minimize the harsh edges you usually get
• How to make a so-so photo great with a few editing tricks

Win a free copy
Katie is giving away five free e-books, each a $35 value. Want one? Leave a comment here with your email address or other way of contacting you. And mention something interesting you'd like to photograph. (I'm betting 70% of the answers will be kids, but we'll see.) Five winners will be selected, contacted, and announced in this post. Giveaway closes at midnight CT on Friday, Sept. 30th.

Get a discount
Interested in purchasing a book? Enter the code ORANGE at checkout and get $5 off the e-book, now through Oct. 7th.

Update: The giveaway is now closed. Congrats to lucky random winners Robyn, Britt, Jolkipalki, Rachel, and Jessica! They've been contacted and will be soon be taking better pictures.

This is great. I've been thinking about getting a digital SLR (mine is film), but have been on the fence just because I love the fun of developing my own film and watching the image slowly appear on paper. Maybe this book will push me over to "the other side". :) My favorite things to shoot are landscapes, flowers and animals for color and abandoned/derelict buildings and the amazing statues and mausoleums on a cemetery for black and white.

I want to be a candid portraiturist - catch folks in the moment where they look most like themselves no matter the light or backdrop. So my ability with shutter speed, iso, and aperture needs to be fast and dead-on.

I love to take walks with my dog and photograph him and anything we fancy. Also, I am going away to college this summer. I will be flying across the country and will be there at least 4 years all by my self. (I live in FL and am going to CA!)I would love to be able to take beautiful picture to send back to my family, and possibly start a blog especially for them to look at and see what I'm up to. I will also be minoring in media, so this book would come in very handy!

I have always. always wanted to go there, but I refuse to until two things happen
1) I get a nicer camera and know precisely how to photograph such beauty, i will not go out there with a cvs $5 camera :)
2) I'm in love

you can't go to a place like this alone :)

I'd love to get my appreciative paws on this book! I've just moved to Cape Town (South Africa) and there is so much here to take pictures of ... in particular the gorgeous landscapes of fynbos (English translation: fine bush) with their delicate little flowers that resemble the English heaths. Fynbos only grows in this tiny area of the world. You should just see the inspiring compositions (that I can never get quite right)of Table Mountain, the sea and the rolling hills of fynbos just aching to be photographed!

This book looks fantastic! I foster kittens and I've found that a great picture makes all the difference in getting interest for adoptions. At first I tried using my little point and shoot but since kittens NEVER stay STILL - it took me taking about 20 to 25 shots just to get 1 good shot (when you need 4 pics of each kitten and theres 5 in the litter - that adds up to a lot of blurry pictures!!) Next I borrowed a friends DSLR and that made a ton of difference - I don't have so many blurrys! Now I just need to learn how to use the camera to take better pictures!! THANKS!!!

Hong Kong ... what a landscape, a city, a people. I'll be back often, since I have family there, so it's not too late to buy a camera and improve now :)

I'd give the book to my dad. Of course, he has the most trouble taking photos of kids with his camera and I think this would be a great tool for him to use!

I'd love to win this book.

I just got a dlsr for my birthday from my hubby with the intent to take better pictures of the baby we are expecting just a few weeks away. (Of course, it's complete insanity to try to become a better photographer with all the craziness of having a baby!)

In anycase, this sounds like a great book.

I'm fine with the composition aspects of photography but the technical side has always eluded me -- it's time to stop "winging it!"
